Navigators Fall in Final Game Before Break

James Payne

A late inning surge by Bristol prompted the Blues to 6-4 win over the North Shore Navigators Sunday night at Fraser Field. The Navigators fall to 16-20 on the season in their final game before the All-Star break and the Blues improve to 18-16.  It didn’t take long for the Blues to get on the board as a Jayson Gonzalez (Vanderbilt) ground out brought in Chris Davis (Princeton) in the top half of the first inning. Navigator’s pitcher Matthew O’Connor (UMass Lowell) settled in after a slow start and threw five consecutive innings of scoreless ball. Nick Fuhrmann (Frostburg State University) RBI single kicked things off en route to a three-run second inning for the Navigators’ Fuhrmann would come around to score on a Ted Leathersich (UMass Lowell) groundout to the pitcher before a Joey Pena (St. Thomas Aquinas) double extended the lead to 3-1.

Following a two-out error in the top of the seventh, Max Goyone (Siena) tied things up with a two-run home run to left. The Blues continued their momentum and opened up a 6-3 lead in the top of the eighth thanks to Guilmette, Gonzalez, and Mitch Williams (Fairfield) RBI singles.

The Navigators got a consolation run in the bottom of the ninth when Pea hit into a fielder’s choice, but the rally was cut short after Daane Berezo (VCU) lined into a game ending double play.

Alex Brickman (St. Petersburg), Henry Funaro (UMass Lowell), Tyler Kapucisnki (Marist), Austen Michel (Dartmouth), Pea, and Chris Pennell (St. Thomas Aquinas) will represent the Navigators in Tuesday night’s FCBL All-Star Game in Bristol, CT.

The Navigators will return to action after the All-Star break with a three game home stand beginning Thursday 7/20 against the Seacoast Mavericks and then both Friday 7/21 and Sunday 7/23 with the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks in town.
