Trick-or-treating, free museum admissions, garage parking, and merchant specials – this year a Salem400+ signature event

Salem – Mayor Dominick Pangallo, in partnership with Salem’s local attractions, museums, and Salem merchants, is pleased to announce that this Halloween’s “Mayors Night Out” will take place on Friday, September 25, 2026. Trick or Treating kicks off on the Pedestrian Mall at 5:30PM by the big fountain. As the City commemorates its quadricentennial anniversary throughout 2026, Mayor’s Night Out this year serves as a Salem400+ signature event, and an especially fitting way to welcome Haunted Happenings season to Salem.

Participating museums and attractions will open free of charge to Salem residents at times throughout the day (note times associated with each attraction below). Residents must provide a photo identification showing proof of Salem residency to gain free admission. Students may use a school identification card, bus pass, or a Salem Public Library card.

As part of Mayor’s Night Out the Museum Place Mall Garage and the South Harbor Garage will offer free parking to Salem residents after 2:00 p.m. (proof of residency will be required when you exit the garages).

“Mayor’s Night Out has become a treasured tradition for Salem residents,” said Mayor Pangallo. “October is a busy time for our businesses, and this is their way to say thank you to our residents, offering a day that lets our locals enjoy Halloween before the month officially kicks off. This year, as we commemorate Salem400+ throughout 2026, this beloved event is an especially meaningful opportunity to center the Salem community and local families before things get especially busy downtown. I appreciate Salem’s business community for embracing this tradition each year, the City staff who work so hard to coordinate all the details, and the community for coming out to participate. Thanks to all who take part in this special event. I am excited to greet all the trick-or-treaters as Mayor!”

There are businesses throughout downtown participating, including a number at Pickering Wharf, and residents are encouraged to visit businesses throughout our community’s downtown neighborhoods. There is still time to be added to the list and join the fun. Any businesses interested in participating should reach out to Jeremy Fiske, Special Events Manager for the City of Salem, in the Mayor’s office for details.

The Salem law firm of Mazow | McCullough, PC, Broad Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, Peabody Essex Museum and National Parks Service will be on hand with some extra special surprises. Creative Collective and their friends from the Good Witch of Salem will be returning to Mayor’s Night Out, bringing along their signature photo backdrops and candy, along with some fun surprises.

BEVERLY— Following this past Saturday’s personal-best performance, Endicott football senior quarterback Shea Lynch (Peabody) has received regional and national recognition from the New England Football Writers Association (NEFWA) as a Week 2 Gold Helmet recipient.

Each week from Labor Day Weekend through the third weekend in November, a New England media member selects the outstanding performer of that week’s games in both the College (Divisions II & III) and University (FBS & FCS) Divisions, known as the Gold Helmet recipients.

Lynch is the first Gull since Zachariah Twardosky ’24 M’25 (Merrimack, N.H.) in 2023 to be named an NEFWA Gold Helmet recipient.

He accounted for a career-high six touchdowns on Saturday as the No. 25/25 nationally ranked Gulls routed Muhlenberg (receiving votes), 49-21, on the road.

The senior quarterback handed the Mules their first non-conference regular season home loss since 2010 by compiling four passing touchdowns (21-27, 249 yards), two rushing scores (7 attempts, 89 yards, 12.7 average), and 338 yards total.

His four passing touchdowns set a new career-high, while his two TDs on the ground tied a career-high.

This is the first time in the senior’s career he has been a Gold Helmet recipient.

BOSTON – Governor Maura Healey today issued a statement on the Trump Administration’s plans to walk away from its duty to regulate pollution from dirty power plants:

“American families and businesses will pay for President Trump’s reckless failure to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. By giving power plants a free pass to pump industrial carbon pollution into our communities, the EPA will saddle people with the bill for more expensive electricity, respiratory illnesses and climate change-fueled disasters. Nobody wants this, and nobody can afford this. The Trump Administration has lost all credibility on energy. We cannot afford more endless wars driving up our gas prices, blocking homegrown clean energy, and furthering our reliance on dirty coal plants. Massachusetts will continue to stand up for our environment, public health, and clean, affordable energy.”

A Century of Tradition: The St. Peter’s Fiesta Photo Album Returns to Gloucester

Cape Ann Museum Calls on the Community to Help Document 100 Years of Community History

GLOUCESTER, MA. (September 2026) – The Cape Ann Museum and the Fiesta 100 Photo Committee, along with Cape Anncestry, are asking families to submit Fiesta photographs for Fiesta at 100: A Community Photo Album, an exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of the St. Peter’s Fiesta in the summer of 2027. Submissions are open now through December 31, 2026. The exhibition will be on view during the 2027 Fiesta at a location to be announced and will be complemented by a companion display at the Cape Ann Museum providing additional historical context and exploring the Fiesta’s significance within the cultural life of Gloucester.

The upcoming exhibition revives and expands upon a photographic display first presented to the public in 1992. Originally hosted in the building that now houses Oak to Ember restaurant, that exhibit was organized by the Gloucester Young Men’s Coalition, an offshoot of the Gloucester Prevention Network. It featured more than 600 photographs gathered from the community, documenting the rich history and traditions of the Fiesta, including novenas, the procession, the altar, the Blessing of the Fleet, sporting events, and carnival festivities. For the centennial exhibition, this original collection will be augmented by new images submitted by local families.

The 2027 project is being led by Joe Palmisano and Jamey Burnham, both of whom were instrumental in the 1992 exhibit. They are working in partnership with Fiesta 100 and Cape Anncestry, a community initiative dedicated to preserving and celebrating the diverse immigrant and ethnic experiences of Gloucester residents.

Reflecting on the project’s impact, Joe Palmisano noted: “Organizing the 1992 exhibit was a true privilege. Families entrusted us with treasured photographs that had often never left their homes. I am honored to participate in this project once again to capture a full century of St. Peter’s Fiesta traditions.”

Collaborating with the organizers and the Museum are students from Gloucester High School, including members of the graphic arts department who will contribute to the exhibition’s research, design, and interpretation.

How to Participate: A Call for Community Photographs

The success of Fiesta at 100 relies on the personal histories held within the Gloucester community. Families are invited to contribute to this historic centennial archive through the following submission methods:

Digital Submissions: High-resolution digital files can be emailed directly to library@capeannmuseum.org

Physical Photographs & Scanning Day: For those with physical prints, the Museum will host a community scanning day on Saturday, October 24, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Janet & William Ellery James Center at CAM Green (13 Poplar Street). Museum staff will be on-site to scan images free of charge, and all original photographs will be returned to families immediately.

Participants are encouraged to provide any descriptive details available, including the approximate year, location, and the names of individuals or lending families. Every submission helps ensure that the 100th anniversary celebration fully reflects the diverse experiences of the Gloucester community.

The Cape Ann Museum, founded in 1875, exists to preserve and celebrate the history and culture of the region and to keep it relevant to today’s audiences. Spanning 44,000 square feet, the Museum’s Downtown campus is a major cultural institution on Boston’s North Shore, welcoming thousands of local, national, and international visitors annually to its exhibitions, programs, and community-led events. The Cape Ann Museum Green (CAM Green), the Museum’s campus off Grant Circle and Route 128 in Gloucester, is home to the 12,000-square-foot Janet & William Ellery James Center, built in 2020. The center includes a flexible exhibition and community programming space designed to reach broader audiences with new exhibits and public programs. CAM Green, which served as the Museum’s base of operations during the renovations, features three historic structures—the White Ellery House (1710), the Babson-Alling House (c. 1740), and an adjacent barn (c. 1740)—as well as a Contemporary Art Wetu (2023–2024) and a Mush8n (mi-shoon) (2023), an Eastern Woodlands boat. From July 10 through September 27, CAM Green will be open Friday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Governor Healey Delivers $300,000 in Relief to North Shore Shellfish Harvesters Impacted by Haverhill Sewage Overflow

Governor meets with local harvesters and delivers checks to help support income lost during 12-day emergency closure

ESSEX – Governor Maura Healey today delivered $300,000 in direct financial relief to North Shore shellfish harvesters that lost income during the emergency shellfish closure caused by the Haverhill sewer overflow.

The relief program, administered by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), was created following the 12-day closure to help cover the maximum estimated value of shellfish that could have been harvested from the affected growing areas during that period.

Governor Healey met with local shellfish harvesters at Woodman’s of Essex, a longtime North Shore seafood restaurant and family business known for its soft-shell clams, to hear directly about the impact of the closure and deliver relief checks.

“When the sewer break forced shellfish beds to close during one of the busiest times of the year, we told these harvesters that we would have their backs,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Today, we’re delivering on that commitment. These are hardworking families and small businesses that are an important part of the North Shore’s economy and way of life, and we’re going to keep supporting them, protecting this industry and giving them more opportunities to get out on the water and earn a living.”

“Shellfishing is a way of life on the North Shore, but it’s also an iconic business that supports families, local restaurants, and our coastal communities,” said Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Tom O’Shea. “This relief helps make up for days these harvesters lost and helps keep an important part of our blue economy working.”

“Here at DMF, our responsibility is to ensure Massachusetts shellfish are safe, healthy and delicious,” said DMF Director Dan McKiernan. “A key part of this mission is working diligently to protect public health and support our shellfish harvesters. We are proud to deliver this critical funding and committed to helping our shellfish industry thrive for generations to come.”

On June 29, DMF issued an emergency closure of shellfish growing areas N1—N14 in Gloucester, Newburyport, Essex, Ipswich, Newbury, Rockport, Rowley, and Salisbury due to the sewer overflow in Haverhill. The closure was required to protect public health and comply with national shellfish sanitation standards.

As water quality improved, DMF tested shellfish from affected areas for indicators of contamination. Those tests came back negative on July 9, allowing the most active shellfish areas to move out of the extended emergency closure and reopen as weather conditions allowed.

Governor Healey is working to give North Shore shellfish harvesters more days on the water by investing in clean water and shellfish research to safely reduce closures.

Last week, the Governor announced expanded access to shellfish harvesting in Plum Island Sound after two years of study by DMF that found significant improvements in water quality. The updated requirements will cut rainfall-related closures by more than half in most of the Sound and could give more than 200 commercial shellfishers an average of 72 additional harvesting days each year.

The Administration is also continuing to invest in the water infrastructure communities need to prevent pollution and protect drinking water. Following the Haverhill sewer force main break, Governor Healey called for continued federal investment in the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds, which help communities modernize aging water and sewer systems and protect water quality.

“The discharge of untreated effluent into the Merrimack River caused an economic disaster for businesses throughout the region, and the softshell clam industry was among the hardest hit. Shellfish beds needed to be closed in a time of peak demand for shellfish around the July 4th holiday, dealing a devastating blow to those who earn a living on the clam flats. This much needed and deserved relief will help them after a time when their clam forks were idle, but their bills kept coming. Thanks to all who brought their voices of support to the discussion that led to these grants, and to the Division of Marine Fisheries and the Department of Fish and Game for turning need into action.”

“Our clammers and oyster farmers fight difficult conditions every day to deliver the healthy, delicious shellfish that our region is famous for. When the sewer main break forced the closure of the shellfish beds out of an abundance of caution, our legislative delegation worked with the Healey-Driscoll administration to secure reimbursement for the harvest that was lost. It is a relief to see these funds finally delivered to the shellfish harvesters who were adversely affected by the sewage overflow. These checks, along with the new rain closure rules, should strengthen this centuries-old industry so that it continues to thrive for years to come.”

“Shellfishing is woven into the history, economy, and identity of Cape Ann, and our harvesters shouldn’t have to bear the financial burden of an emergency beyond their control. These efforts will help protect local livelihoods and keep this historic industry strong.”

BEVERLY -Endicott football senior quarterback Shea Lynch (Peabody) and sophomore wide receiver Jack Steen (Lowell) have been named the Conference of New England’s (CNE) Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week (respectively), the league office announced on Monday evening.

His first punt return of 36 yards in the first quarter aided Endicott in grabbing a 13-0 advantage (9:49), while his second return of 22 yards lifted the visitors to an eventual 36-7 lead before halftime.

The win for Endicott marked the Mules’ first non-conference regular season home loss since 2010.

This is Steen’s first career CNE Speical Teams Player of the Week honor.

Salem Beautification Committee Invites Residents to Get Spooky with Salem 400+ Cat Coloring Contest

SALEM – The Salem Beautification Committee is getting into the Halloween spirit and inviting Salem residents of all ages to grab their crayons, colored pencils, markers, and creativity for the Salem 400+ Luna Coloring Contest!

This Halloween-themed coloring contest gives residents the opportunity to put their own spooky and creative spin on Luna while celebrating Salem’s 400+ anniversary during the city’s most magical time of year. Residents are encouraged to make Luna their own!

“We wanted to create a fun way for Salem residents of all ages to celebrate Salem 400+ while embracing the Halloween spirit that makes our city so special,” said the Salem Beautification Committee. “We’re excited to see how our community brings Luna to life!”

Meet the Artist Behind Luna’s Coloring Page

The official coloring sheet was created by Shannon Fuller, an elementary art teacher in the Malden Public Schools district and a Salem State University alumna. Fuller received her undergraduate degree in Art and Design from Salem State University in 2023 before earning her Master’s in Art Education from Boston University in 2025.

“I am so excited to be a part of Salem 400+ festivities!” said Fuller. “I feel so honored to have been asked to make this coloring sheet for a beautiful city. The City of Salem and SSU alike helped me realize my true potential and I credit a lot of my success to my home away from home! Here’s to another 400+.”

Four Age Divisions: The contest is open to Salem residents of all ages and will feature four age divisions:

One winner will be selected in each age division by the Salem Beautification Committee. The contest launches on Thursday, September 10, 2026, and all entries must be received by Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 – Black Cat Day, just in time for the final days of Salem’s Halloween season.

Beautifying Salem, One Project at a Time

The Salem Beautification Committee is a volunteer committee dedicated to helping make Salem a more beautiful, welcoming, and vibrant community. The committee supports beautification efforts throughout the city, including caring for public gardens and traffic islands, supporting community beautification projects, and encouraging residents to take pride in Salem’s shared public spaces.

This Halloween season, the committee is bringing that same spirit of creativity and community to the Salem 400+ celebration, giving residents a chance to help decorate Luna in their own unique way. Whether Luna becomes a spooky black cat, a colorful Halloween creature, a witch’s familiar, or something entirely unexpected, the Beautification Committee wants to see what Salem can dream up. SALEM – Zero Waste Salem’s Free Book Swap returns on Saturday, September 19, 2026, 10 AM – 1 PM at a NEW location: Horace Mann Laboratory School gym at 79 Willson Street. Attendees will find an impressive collection of books, CDs, DVDs, records, puzzles, greeting cards, and shopping bags, all free.

To donate: bring any of the above items to Horace Mann on Friday, September 18, 4 PM – 7 PM or Saturday, September 19 from 9 AM to noon. Items should be clean, dry, and mildew-free.

The following are NOT accepted and will be turned away: magazines, VHS and cassette tapes, mildewed/outdated books, encyclopedias, and textbooks, and blank or home-recorded CDs/DVDs.

In honor of Salem’s quadricentennial, this swap will feature books, puzzles, greeting cards, and music celebrating our city! Feel free to label relevant donations.
