U.S. Senior Open Golf – Player Withdrawals – Additions to Field – MSO Planning Coverage From This Week’s Event

PEABODY – The U.S. Senior Open Golf Championship begins this week at the Salem Country Club in Peabody. MSONEWSPORTS.com will have extensive coverage from the event. Below are the latest withdrawals and additions to the field.

WITHDRAWAL – John Daly, Dardanelle, Ark.

JOHN DALY has withdrawn from the 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championship because of a shoulder injury.

Daly, who was fully exempt, will be replaced in the field by Ted Tryba, of Orlando, Fla., the second alternate from the Dunedin, Fla., sectional qualifying site.

Tryba, a 50-year-old, shot 70 at Dunedin Golf Club on June 8. He is playing in his first U.S. Senior Open. Tryba competed in five U.S. Opens, with his best finish a tie for 37th in 2000 at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.

Tryba will play with Jeff Sluman and Bob Tway in the first two rounds. The group will start Thursday’s first round at 7:52 a.m. EDT from the first tee.

PLAYER ADDITION: Jaime Gomez, McAllen, Texas
JAIME GOMEZ was added to the 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championship field on Sunday, June 25. The United States Golf Association (USGA) had held one spot in the field for a player who could meet one of the exemption categories, but no one met the requirements.

Gomez, 50, of McAllen, Texas, was the first alternate from the Dallas, Texas, sectional qualifier. He shot a 72 at Las Colinas Country Club on May 22. Gomez, a professional who currently competes on the Adams Pro Tour, is playing in his first U.S. Senior Open.

Gomez will play with Joe Boros and amateur Larry Salk in the first two rounds. The group will start Thursday’s first round at 2:40 p.m. EDT from the 10th tee.

PLAYER WITHDRAWAL: Mark Wiebe, Denver, Colo.
MARK WIEBE withdrew from the 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championship on Sunday, June 25, due to medical issues with his neck.

Wiebe, who was fully exempt, will be replaced in the field by Jeffrey Marsh, of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Marsh, 50, was the first alternate from the Fort Wayne, Ind., sectional qualifier. He shot a 73 at Orchard Ridge Country Club on May 24. An assistant professional at Elcona Country Club, in Bristol, Ind., Marsh is competing in his first U.S. Senior Open.

Marsh will play with Tom Pernice and amateur Chip Lutz in the first two rounds. The group will start Thursday’s first round at 2:19 p.m. EDT from the 10th tee.

PLAYER WITHDRAWAL: Gil Morgan, Edmond, Okla.
GIL MORGAN withdrew from the 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championship on Sunday, June 25, due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Morgan, who was fully exempt, will be replaced in the field by Mike Fergin, of Santa Ana, Calif.

Fergin, 51, was the first alternate from the Vista, Calif., sectional qualifier. He shot a 74 at Vista Valley Country Club on June 12. An assistant professional at Mesa Verde Country Club, in Costa Mesa, Calif., Fergin is playing in his first U.S. Senior Open.

Fergin will play with Bart Bryant and Woody Austin in the first two rounds. The group will start Thursday’s first round at 8:24 a.m. EDT from the first tee.

PLAYER ADDITION – Kurt Van Hees, Danville, Calif.
KURT VAN HEES was added to the 2017 U.S. Senior Open Championship on Sunday, June 25. The United States Golf Association (USGA) had held one spot in the field for the winner of last weekend’s PGA Tour Champions event, in the instance he was not exempt. But fully exempt player Fred Couples won the American Family Insurance Championship on Sunday, June 25.

Van Hees, 51, of Danville, Calif., was the first alternate from the Green Valley, Calif., sectional qualifier. He shot a 69 at Green Valley Country Club on May 30. Van Hees is competing in his first U.S. Senior Open.

Van Hees will play with Jon Levitt and Walter Chapman in the first two rounds. The group will start Thursday’s first round at 9:06 a.m. EDT from the 10th tee.

The 156-player field for the 38th U.S. Senior Open, held at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass., is now complete. There are 78 fully exempt players and 78 sectional qualifiers. There are also 19 amateurs in the field.
