Salem State Women’s Soccer Beats Mass Maritime 7-2, SSU Field Hockey Loses, Volleyball Team Results

SALEM  —  Salem State opened up a 5-1 halftime lead, and easily dispatched visiting Mass Maritime 7-2 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. Casey McFall (Wilmington, Mass.) led the Vikings with two goals as Salem State improves to 2-4-1 on the year and 1-1 in conference. The Buccaneers slip to 2-4 and 0-2 in the MASCAC.

The Vikings dominated possession in the first half as Salem State easily facilitated their offense, which created multiple one-on-one scoring opportunities for the Vikings, who outshot the visitors 13-2 in the first half.

McFall opened the scoring as she found herself alone in the crease against netminder Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.) and beat the sophomore low and away for her second goal of the year.  However, Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass.) answered for Mass Maritime twenty seconds later with her team-leading ninth goal of the season to even the score.

McFall answered with her second score of the game in the sixth minute as Salem State netted four unanswered goals to take a four-point lead into halftime.  Ashley Leboeuf (Dracut, Mass.) provided the third goal before back-to-back scores by Keely  Gallagher  (Middleton, Mass.) and Emily Boyle (Manchester, N.H.) cemented the lead.

The second half saw Kaitlyn Curley (Wilmington, Mass.) and Katie Brown (Milford, Mass.) extend the lead to 7-1 before Taylor connected for her second  goal of the game in the 62nd minute that made the score 7-2.

Both teams went to their bench for the final thirty minutes as Salem State finished with a 25-5 advantage in shots and an 8-0 margin in corner kicks.

Amanda Backe (Danver, Mass.) picked up the win making two saves while Coffey, who played a half, took the loss after posting eight saves. Mikayla Hoilihan (Middleboro, Mass.) played the second half in goal for Mass Maritime and contributed three saves against two goals allowed.

The Buccaneers will host MCLA in a conference game on Friday at 6:00 PM while Salem State entertains UMass Boston Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM.


 

Field Hockey Loses – Local Players Highlighted

SALEM —  Michaila Parent (Westborough, Mass.) scored two goals and Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) added a goal and two assists as Worcester State cruised past Salem State 7-0 in Little East Field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.  The Lancers, who have won four matches in a row, improve to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 in conference. The Vikings slip to 1-7, and 0-5 in the LEC.

Despite holding a 13-1 advantage in shots in the first half, Worcester State found itself in a scoreless tie with Salem State heading into halftime.

However, the Lancers continued to dominate possession in the second half and finally broke through in the 36th minute as Parent scored the first of three straight goals by Worcester State in just under five minutes. Jolane Thibault (Douglas, Mss.) contributed to the lead with her fifth goal of the season before Parent added her second of the game in the 41st minute to stake Worcester State to a 3-0 lead.
Hopkins added an unassisted goal before Hayley Sutherland (Tewksbury, Mass.) rifled in the Lancers’ fifth goal after Worcester State’s 11th corner of the game.

Sammi Souke (Sandwich, Mass.) punched in the sixth, beating goalie Gabriella Cerro (Beverly, Mass.) while Lindsay Ryan (Northbridge, Mass.) closed the scoring, adding a goal in the 65th minute to make the final 7-0 in favor of the Lancers.

Kathryn Salemme (Boxborough, Mass.) and Jenna Jenkins (Westwood, Mass.) combined for the shutout with Salemme earning the win after making two stops. Gabriella Cerro (Beverly, Mass.) made 10 saves in the loss before being replaced by Victoria Kako (Salem, Mass.), who finished with three saves.

Worcester State held a 20-2 advantage in shots and a 15-2 advantage in corners.

The Lancers next host UMass Dartmouth at 7:00 on Tuesday while Salem State travels to Keene State for a 6:30 match on Wednesday.


College Volleyball

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. —  Salem State lost their opening match to MCLA in a tri-meet hosted by the Trailblazers on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings lost 25-18, 25-15, 19-25, 25-23 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest, but followed up with a 3-2 victory over Elms in the second match. Salem State defeated the Blazers 25-15, 17-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-9. The Vikings are now 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the MASCAC.

Salem State was paced by Jasmine Severino’s (Lawrence, Mass.) 13 kills on 36 attacks in the loss to MCLA. Mackenzie Salls (Turners Falls, Mass.) added a match-best 35 assists in defeat while Hannah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) notched 22 digs. Brooke Queripel led MCLA with 14 kills while Sara LaFreniere added 10 in the win.  Tessa Sestito had a nice game off the bench with 19 assists and 4 digs.  Natasha Stewart collected 15 assists for MCLA.  Mele Enomoto had a season best 29 digs while Stewart and Queripel added 14 and 11 respectively.

Severino continued to play well against Elms, leading the Vikings with 14 kills and a season-high six blocks. Salls contributed steady play from the setter position with 39 assists and nine digs while Mullarkey topped Salem State with 17 digs. Samantha Chaisson (Duxbury, Mass.) had six aces, seven kills and 14 digs for the Vikings in the win.
