PSU Men’s Ice Hockey blank Salem State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas) scored two goals and goalie Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) made 26 saves Tuesday evening as Plymouth State University blanked Salem State University, 4-0, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s hockey game at Hanaway Rink.

Morelli kept the Vikings scoreless in five power play opportunities and extended his scoreless streak to more than 200 minutes with his third consecutive shutout, improving to a conference-best 8-2-1 overall.

PSU pushed its unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1), with shutout wins in four of their last five outings. The Panthers, 15-5-2 overall, are comfortably in first place in the MASCAC with a 12-1-1 mark, while second-place Salem State is now 11-8-3 overall and 10-3-2 in conference play.

THE BASICS

at Hanaway Rink, Plymouth, N.H. – Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017

Plymouth State 4, Salem State 0

Records: PSU 16-5-2 (13-1-1 MASCAC); SSU 11-8-3 (10-3-2 MASCAC)

SCORING HIGHLIGHTS

* Stevens now has 17 goals on the season, tied for the top in the MASCAC.

* Junior Chris Zuccaro (Hudson, N.H.) tallied a goal and two assists, and senior Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.) chipped in with two assists.

* Senior Baxter Strachan (Sioux City, Iowa) rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal for his second of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

* Neither team was able to score in the first period, as PSU squandered a two-man advantage for nearly two minutes without a shot on goal, and SSU came up empty on its only power play opportunity.

* Stevens put the Panthers on the board eight minutes into the second period on a power play. Following a face-off in the Salem State zone, Economos and Zuccaro had some nice passing to set up Stevens, who banged home the puck into an open net.

* The Panthers doubled their lead on Zuccaro’s wrap-around goal with less than one second left in the middle period during a 5-on-3 power play.

* The visitors had an excellent opportunity to break through in the first minute of the third period with a 2-on-1 break during a shorthanded situation, but Morelli made two saves and a PSU defender cleared away a loose puck to prevent another scoring chance.

* Stevens made it 3-0 at the 5:12 mark when he buried a shot from point-blank range in the slot off a feed from Zuccaro, and Strachan’s empty-netter sealed the victory.

* Salem State junior Jason Pucciarelli (Newmarket, Ont.) finished with 25 saves as PSU finished with a 29-26 advantage in shots on goal.

NEXT GAME

Both teams return to the ice with MASCAC games on Thursday, Feb. 16, as PSU hosts Fitchb urg State State University for a 6:00 p.m. contest and Salem State entertains UMass Dartmouth for a 7:00 p.m. face-off.

BEVERLYThe Endicott men’s basketball team made quick work of Salve Regina University, 79-44, Tuesday night on a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Valentine’s Day date inside MacDonald Gymnasium.

The Gulls matched their season-low by holding an opponent to 20 points in a half as Endicott took a 35-20 lead into the locker room at the break and never looked back.

Sophomore forward Nick Thibeault (Gorham, Maine) scored a career-high 11 points off the bench to lead the Gulls in scoring while grabbing a career-best seven rebounds in the effort.

In a strong defensive showing, the Gulls forced 20 turnovers by the Seahawks and subsequently scored 29 points off those mishaps to hold an opponent to a season-low 44 points on the night.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is 20-14 overall and 13-3 at home against the Seahawks in the all-time series.
  • The Gulls have won five of the past six meetings, including a 82-66 win earlier this season on Jan. 11, 2017 in the most recent meeting before today to complete the regular-season series sweep.
  • Endicott is 9-1 at home this season and 8-0 on the home hardwood in conference play.

FOR THE FOES

  • Senior forward Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds, dished out a floor-leading four assists, and chipped in 10 points for his 15th double-double of the season.
  • The Seahawks had just four student-athletes contribute to the scoring column as junior guard Rodney Morton (Malden, Mass.) poured in a game-best 27 points.
  • Salve Regina lost its third game in a row.

WHAT’S NEXT

Endicott (19-5, 13-4 CCC) concludes the regular season on Saturday, February 18 at 1:00 p.m. as the Gulls welcome Western New England University to town with the annual Senior Day recognition ceremony taking place before the game.

Salve Regina University (8-15, 6-11 CCC) wraps up the regular season on Saturday, February 18 at 1:00 p.m. as the Seahawks host Gordon on Senior Day.

BEVERLY — The Salve Regina Seahawks played the role of heartbreakers on Valentine’s Day as they defeated the Endicott women’s basketball team, 61-59, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) bout Tuesday night inside MacDonald Gymnasium.

It was a battle of the birds down to the wire as junior guard Hannah Kiernan‘s (Wenham, Mass.) career-high/game-high 19 points wasn’t enough to boost the Gulls.

Despite scoring 23 points off 18 of Salve Regina’s turnovers in the game, the Gulls let a 12-point lead (30-18) with 1:52 on the clock before the half turn into a 32-24 edge at the break and watched as it slipped away heading into the fourth quarter.

This occurred in part because with an aggressive style of play, the Gulls committed roughly a quarter of their 22 fouls on the offensive side of the ball and got in foul trouble early.

Salve Regina took its first lead since the opening bucket of the game (44-43) on sophomore guard Kerri Beland’s (Attleboro, Mass.) trey as the buzzer sounded to signal the end of the third quarter.

A back-and-forth final 10 minutes of action featured four tied scores before junior guard Mary Eden (So. Kingston, R.I.) drove to the hoop with five seconds remaining, drew a foul, and sequentially sunk the game-winning free throws to extend Salve Regina’s win streak to four straight games.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is 13-16 overall and 9-4 at home against the Seahawks in the all-time series.
  • The Gulls have still won six of the past eight meetings, including a 64-60 victory on Jan. 11, 2017 earlier this season.
  • Salve Regina snapped a four-game skid in head-to-head matchups against the Gulls to earn a split in the regular season series with tonight’s win.
  • Tonight’s loss ended Endicott’s three-game win streak.
  • Junior guard Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.) and junior forward Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine)joined Kiernan in double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
  • Coppola grabbed a team-leading eight boards, registered a floor-leading six steals, and recorded a game-high six assists.
  • Senior forward Sarah Hood (Burlington, Mass.)and Shaw each pulled down seven rebounds  before fouling out with 8:06 and 4:09 remaining in the game, respectively.

FOR THE FOES

  • Beland led the way with 16 points for the Seahawks.
  • Freshman guard Torie Scorpio (Cranston, R.I.) and senior forward/center Jillian Woodward (Orono, Maine)chipped in 13 points apiece.
  • Eden dished out a team-high five helpers to go with a game-best nine rebounds, two steals, and eight points.
  • The Seahawks scored 11 second-chance points compared to Endicott’s four.
  • Salve Regina also outscored Endicott, 37-27 in the second half.
