🚨 URGENT HEALTH ALERT: SEVERE RSV LEVELS IN GLOUCESTER 🚨Our March 17, 2026 wastewater testing data shows SEVERE levels of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) concentration. This is the highest rating there is and the virus is expected to continue to spread into April.
🧐WHAT IS RSV AND HOW IS IT SPREAD?
RSV is a common, highly contagious virus, and it can cause severe illness like pneumonia in infants, young children, and older adults. RSV spreads through coughs, sneezes, or contaminated surfaces and infected infants or immune compromised individuals can be contagious for up to four weeks.
🤧WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF RSV?
The primary symptoms of RSV include a fever with coughing, sneezing, and nasal congestion. Severe cases may include difficulty breathing and wheezing. Patients who are wheezing or are in distress and having difficulty breathing should seek immediate medical attention. Infants presenting with these symptoms should see a doctor immediately.
⚔️PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY; STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK!
People with RSV should stay at home until symptoms subside to avoid spreading the virus–especially in the first few days when symptoms are greatest.
HOW CAN I AVOID GETTING RSV?
⚫Practice frequent hand washing
⚫Disinfect commonly touched surfaces
⚫Wear a mask in crowded indoor areas or stay away from people with cold-like symptoms
⚫Vaccination is the best protection for babies (younger than 8 months) and the older population. Speak to your doctor about what is right for you.
