Ipswich 1 Gloucester 0 – Report from Ipswich coach Cortey Penta

**The Ipswich Girls Soccer team came out on top against Gloucester, winning with single goal to make the game 1-0.  While IHS scored early, the score remained the same for the remainder of the game, and Gloucester had a few close opportunities within the final minutes.  However, the Tigers remained relentless in their pursuit of another score, and placed constant pressure on the Gloucester players from all positions on the field.  Incoming freshman, Annie Gillis, had an impressive debut on the varsity team, as she created multiple opportunities from the forward position.  Chloe Lindahl, another forward for the Tigers was an absolute force on the field, attacking with speed and never giving up on the play.  Carolina Ivanov, scoring the lone goal for the Tigers, also played well and again, earned Ipswich many opportunities throughout the game.  At the outside midfield position, senior captain, Malak Rayes was a force, constantly putting pressure on the outside defenders with her speed and great ball control.  Sophomores Cassidy King and Hannah Scruton held down the middle of the field, playing controlled, composed, quick soccer; and defensively, the Tigers worked as a unit to shut down Gloucester’s offensive movement.  Overall, the Tigers played hard, smart, united soccer, earning them the victory.**

Salem State Men’s Soccer Scores Thrilling Win Today

SALEMKevin Gallo (Melrose, Mass.) scored twenty seconds into the second overtime as Salem State ssu-soc-9-7-16-2earned their first victory of the season with a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win over the Curry Colonels on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. The Vikings improve to 1-0-1 on the year while Curry goes to 2-2.

Gallo’s game-winner was set up by Nicholas Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.), who fed a perfect cross pass to Gallo, who rifled in the shot from five yards out.

In an evenly played first half, Salem State jumped on top 1-0 when Vien Pham (Melrose, Mass.) headed in a cross from Caleb Gomes (Nantucket, Mass.) in the 8th minute. Curry answered as Ben Silvia (Dartmouth, Mass.) connected from eight yards out to tie the score at 1-1. Both teams registered six shots on goal.

The second half saw limited scoring chances despite the Vikings holding a 5-1 advantage in shots. Yabesy Musema (Lynn, Mass.) nearly gave Salem State the lead in the 66th minute as he broke free and converged on goalie Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) uncontested, but Johnson made the point blank save to keep the game tied. Curry nearly stole the lead when Salem State goalie Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) drifted too far from the box and an errant pass almost bounced into the net. However, Ryan Smith (Shelton, Conn.) alertly knocked away the potential score at the goal line.

Enos made four saves in the victory while Johnson registered seven saves. The Vikings held a 12-10 advantage in shots.

Salem State travels to Emerson for a 3:30 pm match on Saturday.  Curry hosts Wentworth also on Saturday at 11:00 AM.

Salem State Field Hockey Falls to Western Connecticut

SALEM – Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, Conn.) scored a goal as the Western Connecticut Colonials held off the Salem State Vikings 2-1 in the Little East opener for both teams in field hockey action at Alumni Field. Western Connecticut is now 2-1 and 1-0 in the Little East while Salem State slips to 0-2 and 0-1 in conference.

Matasavage put Western Connecticut on top at the 18:50 mark for her second goal of the season after securing the ball deep in Salem State territory. Vikings goalie Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) made the initial stop, but Matasavage poked home the rebound for a 1-0 Western Connecticut lead.  Shannon Lynch (Sandy Hook, Conn.) put the Colonials up 2-0 when she beat Woodin from the left side for her first goal of the season.

Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) answered for the Vikings less than a minute later on an unassisted goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Western Connecticut held an 11-3 advantage in shots and took a one-goal lead into halftime.

Neither team generated much offense as scoring chances were held in check. Kristy Trotta (Danbury, Conn.) faced one shot attempt in the second half as the Colonials dominated possession, outshooting Salem State 13-1 in the second half. Trotta finished with three saves while Woodin stopped 16 shots.

Salem State will travel to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at 11:00 AM while the Colonials will host Worcester State at 12:00 PM.
