Hamilton Wenham 2, Triton 0 – Notes from coach Nancy Waddell

The Generals put together a strong 80 minutes to grab their second win of the season and recorded their first shutout of the season.  Junior defender Shae Granese led the way offensively and defensively.  In the 16th minute, Granese sent a free kick into the penalty box.  Senior Erin O’Shea headed the ball past the Triton keeper for the first goal of the game.  O’Shea had scored a similar goal off a Granese free kick in the previous game, but a mysterious offsides call negated that goal.

The Generals had control of the midfield and broke through a few times, but couldn’t challenge the Triton keeper.  Finally in the 68th minute, Granese took another free kick and drilled it off the crossbar and into the net.

Addie Condon recorded the shutout for the Generals with 4 saves.

The Generals (2-6-2) will look for their third win on Friday at home against Pentucket.

Trtion 3 Ipswich 2 . 25-21, 24-26, 25-17, 25-27, 14-16 – Comments from Ipswich coach Kerri O’Connor

“Very tough loss to Triton tonight in 5 sets.  Triton did a great job of saving balls off court and never giving up – I commend them for that.  We simply made too many errors and were not attacking the ball with enough tenacity.  Meghan O’Connor was key in serve aces – having her strongest serving match of the season.  Grace Quinn stepped up and served well for her team, Abby Stanicek had multiple kills and Talia Kaplanian did a great job of communicating loudly and passing strong as libero.  We need to bring out confidence back and continue strong for each remaining match – one at a time.”

Coach’s Comments:

It was good to see the team go out there and keep it close and competitive against Masco. We have had many of the younger runners have gone out of their way to put in extra effort during the recent weeks of practice. And while we did not win it is great to see so many of those who have been doing that extra work take giant steps forward with their ability.

Salem State Men’s Soccer Loses

SALEM —  Raffi DeSouza (Watertown, Mass.) scored two late goals as UMass Boston came back to defeat Salem State 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. The Beacons, who have won the past four meetings against the Vikings, are now 4-0-1 in the series going back to 2012. UMass Boston goes to 6-2-2 on the season while Salem State now stands at 5-4.

DeSouza scored twice off corners, both times on headers as UMass Boston erased a 1-0 deficit with just over 12 minutes remaining. The Beacons kept constant pressure on the Vikings’ defense in the second half, taking seven corners in the half and 11 for the game, compared to just three for Salem State. In a game that featured seven yellow cards and a red card against Vikings keeper Chris Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.), the Beacons capitalized on their opportunities.

Salem State’s Nahuel Aligbay (Leominster, Mass.) scored the only goal of the first half, netting his fourth goal of the year on a free kick after UMass Boston keeper Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) touched the ball outside the penalty area in the 23rd minute. UMass Boston’s Eric Murakami (Woburn, Mass.) almost tied the game with three minutes left in the first half, but his bid from 20 yards out curled just right of the post.

UMass Boston, which combined for just four shots in the first half, outshot Salem State 9-1 in the second half, and 13-4 for the game.

Castro-Dreher, who started for UMass Boston, allowed one goal and made a save before being replaced by Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.), who picked up the win, making one save in forty-five minutes of action.

Chris Jimenez (Nashua, N.H.) stopped six shots as Gus Savage (Georgetown, Mass.) – one save closed out the game in goal for the Vikings.
