Wakefield High School Athletics: Fall Sports Updates – Team Notes – Photos – More

Wakefield High School Fall Athletics Update – with AD Brendan Kent

Field Hockey back in Tourney Talk:  After a tough start to their regular season, the WMHS Field Hockey team has been able to string together a few wins to keep their state tournament hopes alive.  The team recently racked up wins against league foes Melrose and Arlington to get back into the state tournament picture.  Seniors Olivia Cameron and Vanessa Kaddaras have paced Warrior’s offense.  The team needs to continue this hot streak if they wish to make it to the postseason.

Boys Cross Country Continues to Dominate:  The Wakefield Warriors Cross Country team is quickly Wakefield Boys XC 10 5 17turning into one of the premier cross country programs in the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  The team has had very little competition thus far, as they have won all of their meets with relative ease.  This past weekend, the team ran in their first state-wide competition; the Frank Kelley Invitational.  Due to their recent success, Wakefield HS was bumped up to the highest racing division to compete with all of the top Division-1 schools from across the state.  Once again, the bump did not matter.  Despite competing against schools such as St. John’s Prep, with three times the amount of male enrollment as Wakefield HS, the Warriors still took home first place in the race.  Wakefield’s Matt Greatorex, Tommy Lucey, and Rohan Singhvi all finished in the top 20 in the race, scoring crucial team points for the Warriors.  As of this week, the team is now ranked #5 in the Massachusetts Track Coaches Association polls, and #1 among all Middlesex League schools.  Congrats to the entire team on all of their success thus far, and best of luck in their quest for yet another EMass State Title!

Girls Cross Country Streak Comes to an End:  The Girls Cross Country team came up one point short yesterday, as they fell to a strong Melrose Red Raiders team.  Despite the loss, Coach Karen Barrett and the team should be proud of everything they have been able to accomplish in recent years.  Yesterday’s loss marked the team’s first Middlesex Freedom defeat in six year!  Six years!  That is an amazing accomplishment!  Even with yesterday’s loss, the team could still potentially win their seventh consecutive league championship, if they are able to win the rest of their meets.  Who knows…. Next week’s meet could be the beginning of another six year streak for the Girls Cross Country team!  Congrats to the Girls Cross Country program on everything they have been able to accomplish, and best of luck with the rest of the season.

Girls Swimming Looking Strong:  The future of the Wakefield HS Girls Swim team looks very promising.  The Warriors have already had impressive wins over Stoneham, Arlington and Watertown.  Despite having one of the youngest varsity lineups in the league, the team has still had strong performances against some of the larger schools in the league such as Lexington.  The season has been somewhat of a family affair of sorts.  Senior Caroline Sweeney and her younger sister Laura Sweeney (freshman) have both provided the team with a spark, especially when competing in relays together.  Freshman Hannah Guay (daughter of Coach Kim Guay, and younger sister of former WMHS Swim captain Maddy Guay) has also been one of several underclassmen on the team to contribute.  The team already has several swimmers that have qualified for states.  With such a strong group of young swimmers on the team, the future of WMHS Swimming looks very bright.
