GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department extinguished a fire that torched the porch and heavily damaged the exterior of a multi-family home on Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 1:36 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, the Gloucester Fire Department responded to 9 Sadler St. for a report of a fire beneath the porch of a 2 1/2-story, multi-family home.
Upon arrival, Gloucester firefighters found heavy fire beneath the porch extending up the exterior of the building. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive attack, dousing the blaze.
The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down. Firefighters then checked for extension into the building and extinguished remaining hot spots.
No injuries were reported.
The Gloucester Fire response included Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 5, Ladder 2, Command 1, Command 2, Command 3 and Rescue Company 4.
Mutual aid was provided the Manchester-by-the-Sea Fire Department, which responded to the scene with an engine.
Beauport Ambulance provided medical standby.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Gloucester Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. However, the origin of the fire appears to be the porch.
“I want to thank our Gloucester firefighters and our mutual aid partners for their quick response and coordinated efforts,” said Chief Smith. “Their work quickly brought this fire under control and prevented it from causing greater danger and even more extensive damage.”
