Ipswich 3 Hamilton Wenham 2 – Notes from HW coach Nancy Waddell

“Ipswich handled our pressure, including two crossbars, and finished off a nice goal in the final minutes to put them on top.  Ipswich had scored first on a long shot from 40 yards out.  H-W goals were scored by Eliza Campbell (her first Varsity goal) off a pass from Cate Pasquarello in the 20th minute and Grace Tymann had the second on an assist from Erin O’Shea in the 26 minute.Ipswich tied it up with 2 minutes to go in the first half on a direct free kick.  Karen Caufield had 2 saves for the Generals.

Sophomores Erica Luo and Gabi Cooper had strong games at defense and midfield, respectively.”

The Generals are 0-1-1 and look for their first win against Masco on Thursday

Post game comments from Ipswich coach Courtney Penta, “Ipswich garnered their first win of the season against the powerhouse Hamilton-Wenham Generals.  After 80 plus minutes, of intense, high-stress soccer, the Tigers came out on top winning 3 to 2.  The teams were evenly matched as Ipswich was able to rise to meet the tenacity and skill of Hamilton-Wenham.  Ipswich scored first, after Junior midfielder Sophie Harmon crossed a ball into the Ipswich 18, which was cleared out, only to be one-timed back in by Tigers’ Freshman defender, Lauryn Whynott.  The ball dropped right in behind the Generals’ goal keeper, to give Ipswich the first goal.  Hamilton quickly countered, and tied the game.  Next, Ipswich Junior Olivia St. Peter, stepped up to take a direct kick for Ipswich from about 25 yards out, and curved the ball perfectly into the opposite corner to regain the lead.  The final Ipswich goal was scored by Senior, Co-captain Ava Hoog, who despite being a center back, played forward and dribbled her way through a few defenders to create a the final goal for the Tigers.  Tigers’ goalie, Anna Davis, had an exceptional game, and on many occasions, kept the fast, skilled, aggressive offense of HW from finishing.

Coach’s Comments:

This was another close loss and it was in our (Baker) division. Therefore this was really tough. I think once the whole team hits their stride we will really see some major improvement. For example today I would say that for various reasons about half the team simply had a bad race. On the other side of that we had big performances from Nadja, Rayna, and Hannah who battled this whole race. Alongside them were many others who stepped up, and improved on their times from last week. My hope for the meet in Amesbury on Friday is that everyone is on that good half and we can put forth our best effort.
