Tuesday Night Sports Update: Hamilton-Wenham Girls Basketball Tops Beverly 51-47 To Win Patton Tournament – Endicott Basketball Results

HAMILTON – Hamilton Wenham girls defeated Beverly in the Championship game of the Patton Tournament 51-47. HW forced 22 turnovers.  Cate Blatchford was the tournament MVP and had 15 points.  Kelly Walsh was named to the all tournament team and had 10 pts and 12 rebounds.  Lauren Flynn was also named to the all tournament team and had 8 pts and 14 rebounds.  Jacqueline Fibbe had 5 pts and a key basket in the 4th quarter, while Cassidy Cring took a key charge in the game. Hamilton-Wenham improved to 9-9 on the season.

Men’s Basketball

BEVERLY, Mass. – It was another Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) overtime thriller between the Endicott men’s basketball team and the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards Tuesday night inside MacDonald Gymnasium as the guests secured a 75-72 victory in dramatic fashion.

Junior guard Max Motroni (West Warwick, R.I.) tied his career-high with 25 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double in the defeat.

Wentworth came out hot, starting the game with a 16-0 run until Endicott managed to get on the scoreboard with a pair of Motroni’s free throws at the 13:08 mark of the first half.

Endicott responded with a 12-0 run of its own to make it 16-12 with 7:31 to play in the opening half.

Wentworth fought back with a 9-0 run to go up 25-12 with 5:10 remaining in the first stanza as the Leopards eventually took a 32-26 lead into the locker room as senior guard Kyle Romich (Groton, Mass.) led the way with 16 points. Motroni carried Endicott by scoring half of the team’s points (13) in the first twenty minutes.

The Gulls were able to grab a six-point lead (their largest) with 9:05 to play in the second half, 52-46, but the lead didn’t last as the second half plus overtime featured 11 knotted scores as it truly was a battle right down to the end.

Junior guard Kamahl Walker (Worcester, Mass.) converted an and-one layup with four seconds remaining in the game to send it to overtime, tied 62-62.

The Leopards led by as much as three in overtime, but Motroni tied it once more at 72-all with an electric three-pointer with 55 seconds remaining.

Sophomore forward Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) sent the Leopards flying onto the court with his game-winning trey with 1.3 seconds left to secure the team’s third win in a row.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Motroni has scored 20+ points in six games this season and has double-digits in all 23 games he’s played.
  • The Gulls placed two more student-athletes in double figures as junior forward Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.) was one rebound shy of his third consecutive double-double, as he finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Walker added 10 points.
  • Wentworth snapped Endicott’s four-game win streak earlier this season and again today.
  • Endicott and Wentworth played to overtime for the sixth time in their series history, where Wentworth owns a 4-2 all-time record in the extra session
  • Endicott is 1-2 in overtime this season.

FOR THE FOES

  • Romich went off for a game-high 32 points on 10-of-21 shooting (3-of-6 3PT) and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
  • The Leopards placed two more student-athletes in double figures as sophomore guard Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) and Ganley chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
  • Wentworth’s largest lead of the game (16 points) came at the 13:38 mark of the first half.
  • Wentworth swept Endicott in the regular season.
  • The Leopards out-rebounded the Gulls, 43-41, as senior forward Ian Therriault (Auburn, Maine) brought down a team-high eight boards.

NOTES

  • Endicott is now 22-10 all-time against the Leopards, as the most recent meeting before today was a 77-75 win for Wentworth in Boston, Mass. on Jan. 14, 2016.
  • The Gulls have won five of the last seven head-to-head matchups against Wentworth and are 13-4 at home all-time dating back to 1995 in head-to-head matchups.

Women’s Basketball

BEVERLY, Mass. – Sophomore guard Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.) registered her first career double-double as the Endicott women’s basketball team used a strong third quarter to put away visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology, 58-44, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday night inside MacDonald Gymnasium.

Coppola notched 10 points and a career-high 11 assists as the Gulls opened the game with a 4-0 lead until Wentworth took a 7-6 edge and the teams traded leads until Endicott secured a 16-10 advantage after holding the Leopards scoreless for the last three minutes of the first quarter.

Endicott went into the locker room at halftime, up 25-20, as sophomore forward Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine) paced the team with six of her 13 points in the first half, while Wentworth’s senior guard Rachael Camara (Fall River, Mass.) led the floor with eight points in the first twenty minutes.

The Gulls put their foot on the gas with a 6-0 run to open the third quarter and created some breathing room thanks in part to six points apiece from senior guard Kelsey Cuddy (Madison, Conn.) and sophomore guard Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) in a 22-point third quarter for Endicott.

Endicott headed into the fourth quarter with a 47-31 edge and built an 18 point margin at the 8:17 mark for their largest lead of the game on senior forward Caity Lowry‘s (Quincy, Mass.) jumper.

Sophomore guard Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) made it just a ten-point deficit for Wentworth with 4:50 remaining with a jumper of her own, but Endicott got seven points from Shaw down the stretch to close out the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Coppola’s 11 assists were one shy of the all-time program record for assists in a single game (12), held by Jen McBrien on Nov. 28, 2012 against Salve Regina.
  • Senior forward Sarah Hood (Burlington, Mass.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds (game-high five offensive) as Endicott won the battle of the glass with 38 rebounds to the Leopards’ 26.
  • Endicott shot a team-high 58.8 percent in the third quarter.

FOR THE FOES

  • Camara had a game-high 16 points on 4-of-16 from the field, including 2-of-7 from three-point land and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Camara also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Sabino also was in double digits with 11 points and six rebounds, four assists and one steal.
  • Senior forward Carly Rogers (Scarborough, Maine) chipped in eight points to go with five rebounds and two assists.
  • The Leopards have lost eight in a row.
  • Roger and Camara became the 11th and 12th student-athletes in Wentworth women’s basketball history to reach the 1,000 career point milestone tonight.
