Do you know your clouds? – From National Weather Service

Cumulus clouds, the puffy white clouds we see on a fair weather day, are typically around 5000 to 7000 feet. These clouds are made of water droplets. Cirrus clouds, the wispy high clouds made of ice crystals, are much higher, up near 25,000 feet high, or five miles up! A cumulus cloud can build to the height of cirrus clouds in a cumulonimbus. These clouds form when the atmosphere is very "unstable", where rising air is warmer and lighter than its surroundings, keeping it buoyant as it rises. Cumulonimbus clouds are made of primarily water droplets in the low levels and ice crystals higher up.
