SUSPECT FROM Lynn ARRESTED AFTER STRIKING TROOPER WITH VEHICLE; FIREARM DISCHARGE UNDER INVESTIGATION

t approximately 1:10 p.m. today two Massachusetts State Police Troopers attempted to stop motor vehicle operated by a wanted suspect on Shirley Avenue in Revere.

The suspect, JUAN PINEDA, 21, of Lynn, was wanted for motor vehicle violations including failure to stop for police stemming from a past incident when he fled from a Trooper.

The Troopers — a Field Training Officer and the new Trooper he is training — exited their cruiser and approached the suspect vehicle, an Audi. A Trooper ordered PINEDA to exit the vehicle.

The suspect PINEDA refused the verbal commands to exit the vehicle and accelerated as the Troopers were on foot outside the Audi. As PINEDA did so his accelerating car struck the Field Training Officer in his leg. During the interaction, a shot or shots were discharged by one or both Troopers. The suspect was not struck and fled the scene.

PINEDA stopped the vehicle a short distance away on Arlington Street and bailed out of the car on foot. He was captured by Revere Police after a foot pursuit. PINEDA is being booked at the State Police-Revere Barracks on charges related to today’s incident, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as the outstanding warrant.

Both Troopers are being evaluated at a Boston hospital, where the Field Training Officer is also being treated for a leg injury.

The facts and circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by State Police. Per state law, the District Attorney of jurisdiction, Suffolk DA Rollins, will review the findings of the investigation.

PINEDA is expected to be held overnight and arraigned in Chelsea District Court.
