St. Mary’s Girls Basketball Opens MIAA Tournament with a 62-33 Win Over Dedham – Game Notes, Postgame Interviews, & Photos

LYNN (Videos – Photos) The defending state champion St. Mary’s girls basketball team opened this year’s playoffs Thursday night with a 62-33 win over Dedham. The #5 seeded Spartans in the D3 Tournament never trailed in this game against #28 Dedham. St. Mary’s will play the winner of Thursday night’s Arlington Catholic at Apponequet game. St. Mary’s was led offensively by a 12-point performance from freshman guard Bella Owumi. Charleigh Green, an 8th grader, netted 10-points for the Spartans. Dedham was led by an 18-point game from senior captain Nicki Brown. St.Mary’s led by 19-points at the half (30-11) and came out strong in the third quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 43-11 lead. The Spartans largest lead (40-points) of the game came in the opening moments of the fourth quarter when Juliana Conte hit a three-point shot for a 55-15 St. Mary’s lead.
