Saturday: MBTA Train Construction – Useful Links – Business – Sports – Weather – Coast Guard Protecting Border in Vermont – Video of the Day

NORTH SHORE – In news briefs, the Massachusetts state legislature has passed the 2018 FY budget featuring increased local aid to cities and towns.

MBTA train restrictions go into effect today. The MBTA will install federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) systems along the Newburyport/Rockport Line to improve safety by reducing train collisions and derailments. This work will require weekend shutdowns on the entire line from July 8 through September 30. To help passengers travel between Boston and the North Shore, the MBTA is running ADA accessible bus shuttles (with WiFi and restroom facilities) that will make stops at every Commuter Rail station.

During this time, the special weekend fare will be $10 roundtrip, and Zone 3 or higher monthly passes will be accepted. Additionally, parking will be free at all stations north of Beverly Depot.

U.S. Coast Guard, Canada, state and local partners fortify border security during Operation Green Mountain

Operation Green Mountain

BOSTON — The Coast Guard, in collaboration with U.S. Border Patrol and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, conducted a joint operation June 23 – July 4 to enhance our U.S. and Canada law enforcement partnerships, and help synchronize a joint response to threats while maintaining and increasing the security of our borders.

The joint operation, named Green Mountain, was held along our shared border with Canada in the vicinity of Lakes Champlain and Memphramagog. The operation was designed with the following objectives:

  • Detect, deter and prevent illicit maritime activity along our shared U.S. and Canadian Border.
  • Sustain maritime domain awareness along the Northern Border.
  • Continue to improve efficiency and effectiveness of interagency and international coordination along the Northern Border.

During Operation Green Mountain, more than 30 personnel from multiple agencies conducted 200 recreational vessel boardings that resulted in the issuance of 18 warnings and 5 safety related voyage terminations.

“This operation was a perfect illustration of partnering with our law enforcement partners and fostering those relationships,” said Lt. Junior Grade Kyle Wiford, the Coast Guard Sector Northern New England Operation Green Mountain Team Lead. “Each agency brought something to the table, including resources, area knowledge, and authorities, that were critical to the success of Operation Green Mountain.”

Coordinating law enforcement efforts with international, federal, state and local partners provides maritime security and prevents disruptions to our economically critical waterways while respecting the sovereignty of both nations.

Other participating agencies included the Vermont and New York State Police, Newport Police Department, Franklin Country Sheriff’s Office, and the Vermont Intel Center.

The time period for the operation was selected based on increased maritime activity around several holidays including: Quebec’s St. Jean Baptiste Day on June 24, Canada Day on July 1, and U.S. Independence Day on July 4.
