Salem State Baseball Falls To Wheaton – Softball Team Splits a Doubleheader With Plymouth State – Women’s Lacrosse Falls

NORTON, Mass. – Senior Jimmy Smith nearly hit for the cycle as a slugfest broke out on Thursday afternoon at Sidell Stadium with the Wheaton College baseball team defeating Salem State 13-10. 

The Lyons, who ended the contest with 13 hits, improve to 11-5 on the season. The Vikings slip to 5-9-1 overall.

Smith ended the contest 3-for-5 from the plate, finishing a single short of the cycle, while scoring three times and knocking in three runs. First-year Tommy Larason earned his first win of the season after coming in to relieve Jimmy Gowen in the fourth.

Mike Davis ended the day 3-of-4 with an RBI for the Vikings, while teammate Jose Cedano concluded his day 3-for-5.

Wheaton opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after Smith legged out a first pitch triple to right field. Smith came in moments later on a knock to the shortstop by Joshua LaJoie. First-year Tyler Walsh brought in LaJoie later in the inning with a two out single through the left side. 

With runners in scoring position, Salem State countered in the top of the second, starting with an RBI groundout by Alex Toomey. Andrew Deloury followed that up with a double to left that brought in Mike Davis. After loading the bases with two out, Teghan Malionek hit all three players in with a double down the left field line.

Trailing 5-2, Wheaton had an answer in the bottom of the third with nine runs coming in to score with the Lyons batting through the lineup. LaJoie, Justin Silvestro, Joey Santigate, Ty Calabro, Willy Boyd, and Smith all picked up RBI’s in the inning. The highlight of the inning was a three-run homerun off the scoreboard in right field by Smith, who started the inning with a double to right center.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Salem State cut the deficit to 11-8 in the fifth with the help of a Wheaton error and a two-run homerun by Davis.

The Lyons earned a run back in the bottom of the sixth with Silvestro coming around on a hard hit single by Matthew Cook.

A balk by Jared Clement with the bases loaded in the seventh allowed a Viking run to trot home. Salem State picked up another run moments later on an RBI single through the left side by Toomey. 

Silvestro led-off the eighth with a solo homerun down the right field line, earning the Lyons a 13-10 victory.

Salem, Mass. – Salem State Softball split a doubleheader with Plymouth State on Thursday evening at Alumni Field. In game one, Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to propel the Vikings to a 4-3 victory. In game two, Callia Abbott (Atco, N.J.) went 5.2 innings and allowed just a run on four hits to lead the Panthers to a 7-1 victory. Salem State is now 5-9 on the season while the Panthers stand at 7-9.  

Game 1
Starting pitchers Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.) and Meghan Black (Winchendon, Mass.) kept both offenses in check until the fifth inning when Salem State broke through to take a 3-0 lead. Bobbie Dee Regan (Lynn, Mass.) blasted a double that scored Dahlia DeCologero (Woburn, Mass.), who had walked with the game’s first run. Molly McLean (Arlington, Mass.) followed with a single to plate Regan and the Vikings led 2-0. McLean made her way to third on a wild pitch and steal, and scored on another wild pitch to give Salem State a 3-0 cushion.

Plymouth State battled back to tie the game, 3-3 in the top of the sixth.  Taylor Wood (Londonderry, N.H.) doubled to lead off the inning, and Emma Rhodes (Rochester, Mass.) followed with a single to put runners on second and third. Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) plated both with a double to bring the Panthers to within 3-2.  IIeish Burney (Briston, Conn.) replaced Black and following a sacrifice, scored on a pinch-hit single by Abbott  to tie the game.

Salem State quickly regained the lead in the top of the sixth as Jess Raymond (Peabody, Mass.) singled and after a sacrifice, scored the game-winner on Crovo’s single. In the seventh, Burney gave up a one-out walk, but ended the game with a 4-6-3 double play to secure the win.

Burney picked up the victory, pitching two innings and allowing just two hits and a walk. Black pitched five innings and allowed three runs on nine hits with a strikeout.  Plymouth State’s Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and strikeout. Mathieu pitched five innings and gave up six hits and three runs with six walks and three strikeouts.

Regan went 2-for-3 for the Vikings with a double and triple while Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) and Rhodes each went 3-for-4 for the Panthers.

Game 2
Abbott pitched into the sixth inning with the Panthers ahead 2-1 before being replaced by Roberts. Plymouth State built a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Kennard and a run by Wood on a passed ball. Salem State cut into the deficit following an RBI double by DeCologero. DeCologero advanced to third, but Roberts relieved Abbott and got out of the inning.

Rachael Cyr (Amesbury, Mass.) started for the Vikings, but was replaced by Burney after two innings. Meghan Black relieved Burney with Salem State trailing 2-1 in the fifth. Black blanked the Panthers over the next two innings, but ran into trouble in the seventh, giving up five runs as Plymouth State pulled away for the 7-1 win.  Moylan and Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass.) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A sacrifice put the runners on second and third and Abrie Davis (Amherst, N.H.) followed with a run-scoring single. With the bases loaded, a passed ball scored another run, and a throwing error brought Wood home for a 5-1 advantage. A bases loaded walk plated another run before Moylan ended the scoring with an RBI single.

Abbott (1-1) picked up the win while Burney (4-4) took the loss for Salem State, giving up two runs on one hit with two strikeouts.       

Moylan and Wood had two hits apiece for the Panthers while DeCologero went 1-for-3 for the Vikings with their only RBI.

Salem State will host MCLA in an MASCAC doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM. Plymouth State will travel to UMass Dartmouth this weekend for a Little East contest.

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) made a career-high 14 saves on Thursday evening, including eight in the second half, helping to preserve at 14-8 win for UMass Dartmouth women’s lacrosse over Salem State at Cressy Field.

The Corsairs have now won three-straight games heading into Little East Conference play, and have doubled last season’s win total at 4-2. Senior Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) again led the UMass Dartmouth offensive attack with five goals, while sophomores Julia DiPillo (Medway, Mass.) and Raquel Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) each registered career-highs in goals with four and three, respectively.

Salem State’s Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) collected a team-high four goals, and senior Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) contributed two.

The Corsairs dominated the first 20 minutes of play, building an 8-2 lead on the hot sticks of Kane and DiPillo. After UMass Dartmouth scored the first two goals, Erin Riley put the Vikings on the board with a free position shot before Kane buried the next two scores.

Smith registered her first goal of the night at 12:41, but the Corsairs would pot four-straight goals over less than four minutes. Kane and Raquel Riley upped the lead within forty seconds of each other, followed by back-to-back DiPillo scores. The Vikings would close the half on a high note, as Smith put in two more to trail only 8-4 the break.

Sophomore Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.) led off the scoring of the second half on classmate Erin Kish’s (Littleton, Mass.) second assist of the night, but Smith tallied her fourth straight goal for Salem State after four scoreless minutes. Erin Riley then beat Burchill six minutes later, cutting the Viking deficit to only three.

UMass Dartmouth would then turn up the heat, capitalizing on multiple Burchill saves in the last ten minutes and registering five of the last seven goals. DiPillo broke Salem’s scoring streak at 19:12, with Raquel Riley registering two and Kane another goal in the next three minutes. Junior Catrina Longo (Billerica, Mass.) then capped the scoring at 27:02.

Douty and junior Kathryn Gibb (Georgetown, Mass.) each caused two turnovers on the evening to lead the UMass Dartmouth defense. Salem State goalkeeper Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) turned aside nine shots on the contest.

The Corsairs will make the trek to Plymouth State on Saturday at 1 p.m. to being league play. The Vikings also open conference play on Saturday, traveling to Framingham State for a 10 a.m. start.
