Planned Road Closures for Halloween in Salem – Weekend Update – Click for City Map

SALEM – The City of Salem has announced planned road closures for October 29 and October 31. Closures may also be instituted on October 30 if necessary. Those who drive through Salem as part of their regular commute should not plan on doing so October 29-31 and should seek alternative routes through the area. Those planning to visit Salem between October 29-31 should use public transportation. Parking is limited and will not be available, and many downtown roads will be closed to traffic. ROAD CLOSURES

On Saturday October 29, the Salem Police Department will close most downtown streets by 11:00 a.m., and on Monday October 31 downtown streets close by 3:00 p.m., though some may close earlier if there is a public safety need. If necessary, some road closures will also take place on October 30. Traffic moving in and out of Salem is expected to be extremely heavy between 4:00 p.m. and midnight on October 29 and October 31, and possible October 30.

Planned road closures include: Essex Street from North Street to Union Street, Washington Street from New Derby Street to Bridge Street, Federal Street from Washington Street to North Street (and a small portion of Federal Street by the BRIX building), a portion of Church Street, a portion of Lynde Street, Washington Square North and West from Essex Street to Williams Street, a portion of Washington Square South, Hawthorne Boulevard, Derby Street from Lafayette Street to Congress Street, Route 1A, Charter Street, Central Street, Front Street, and Lafayette Street from New Derby Street to Front Street.

Please also be aware that crowd size could also require the Police Department to shutdown other streets not listed above, as well as street closures on Sunday, October 30th.

Bridge Street at Sgt. James Ayube Memorial Drive will also close to all traffic between the westerly overpass ramps and Sgt. James Ayube Memorial Drive from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. for the closing fireworks to be held at 10:00 p.m. on October 31.

 NO PARKING AREAS

Posted temporary no parking tow zones from 6:00 a.m. to midnight October 29 and October 31 include:

  1. Lafayette Street from Derby Street to Front Street on both sides.
  2. Public parking lot along Front Street.
  3. Public parking spaces located at the Front Street/Central/Charter Streets intersection.
  4. Essex Street from North Street to Union Street on both sides.
  5. Derby Street from Union Street to Lafayette St on both sides.
  6. Hawthorne Boulevard on both sides.
  7. Front Street.
  8. Central Street.
  9. Church Street.
  10. Washington Street from New Derby to Bridge Street on both sides.
  11. Washington Square South and West on both sides, and a portion of Washington Square North.
  12. Norman Street from Washington Street to Crombie Street.
  13. New Derby Street from Klopp Alley to Lafayette Street.
  14. Margin Street in front of the post office is no parking and open for taxi standing only.
  15. Federal Street from St. Peter’s Street to Washington Street, including near the old courts, on both sides.

Follow posted no parking areas carefully. Illegally parked cars in these areas will be ticketed and towed away for public safety.

Downtown residents will be able to park in the YMCA/Sewall Street parking lot on October 31. A driver’s license or proof of downtown residency will be required to access this lot. Please do not park in the spaces reserved for early voting.

TRICK-OR-TREATING

Trick-or-treating takes places in Salem neighborhoods throughout the evening, starting around 5:00 p.m. and lasting until about 8:00 p.m. When driving through neighborhoods be attentive to children who will be out trick-or-treating and drive with caution.
