Virginia A. Carten Gallery

“Ties That Bind”: Artwork by Barbara Naeser

Monday, July 3rd through Thursday, July 27th

Public Reception: Wednesday, July 12th, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

“Ties That Bind” is the title of Barbara’s exhibit at the Virginia Carten Gallery in the Abbot Public Library, 235 Pleasant St., Marblehead, from Monday, July 3rd through Thursday, July 27th. There will be a public artist’s reception on Wednesday, July 12th, from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.

This exhibition consists of a collection of Barbara’s oil paintings, including her most recent work, and a selection of her pastel paintings, mostly done in a pastel workshop in San Miguel de Allende earlier this year. She likes to paint fun and familiar subjects that are significant to her, subjects and objects from her everyday life including grandchildren. There is a little whimsy in many of her paintings. You will see children, places, still lives, winter, summer, Colorado… I hope you will enjoy the variety of pieces Barbara has worked on.

“Each new painting presents a personal challenge. I strive to capture the image, gesture or idea that first inspired me. My paintings are fresh and happy with loose brushstrokes and vibrant color. My work has an immediacy about it which gives it a contemporary flair.”

Barbara Naeser lives in Marblehead and is a juried artist member of the Marblehead Arts Association where she was on the Board of Directors for many years. She is also a member of Salem ARTS, and Newburyport Art Association and is the Treasurer for Swampscott Arts Association. She has chaired the Senior Exhibit for the MFoA for the last 3 years. Her work has been displayed in Wit and Whimsy, Gold Direct Care, Lost and Found, Hip Baby Gear, and Lizzy Lou in Marblehead as well as other locations on the North Shore.

For more information, visit the artist’s website at www.barbaranaeser.com.

“Conversations on Race: Microaggressions”

Co-sponsored by the Marblehead Racial Justice Team and the Abbot Public Library

Monday, July 17th, 7:00 pm

in the Library’s Main Level Reading Room

We’ve all heard of microaggressions. But have you ever wondered whether you’ve unintentionally committed a microaggression? Join us for a discussion about what makes a statement a microaggression, how to avoid them yourself, and what actions you might, or might not, take when you see someone else saying something that could be considered racially insensitive.

We will examine these questions at our “Conversations on Race,” on Monday, July 17th, at the Abbot Public Library, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The discussion will be facilitated by members of the Marblehead Racial Justice Team, who bring their background in racial justice and group facilitation to support the conversation. Join us to listen, learn, and talk openly with others striving to move racial justice forward.

Never been? Come at 6:45 pm to ask any questions you may have about the process. Bring a friend!

Library Book Discussion Group

Tuesday, July 18th, 10:00 am – 11:00 am

On Tuesday, July18th, at 10:00 am, the Library Book Discussion Group will get together to discuss Mischling by Affinity Konar. All are welcome to attend!

It’s 1944 when the twin sisters arrive at Auschwitz with their mother and grandfather. In their benighted new world, Pearl and Stasha Zagorski take refuge in their identical natures, comforting themselves with the private language and shared games of their childhood. As part of the experimental population of twins known as Mengele’s Zoo, the girls experience privileges and horrors unknown to others, and they find themselves changed, stripped of the personalities they once shared, their identities altered by the burdens of guilt and pain. That winter, at a concert orchestrated by Mengele, Pearl disappears. Stasha grieves for her twin, but clings to the possibility that Pearl remains alive. When the camp is liberated by the Red Army, she and her companion Feliks – a boy bent on vengeance for his own lost twin – travel through Poland’s devastation. Undeterred by injury, starvation, or the chaos around them, motivated by equal parts danger and hope, they encounter hostile villagers, Jewish resistance fighters, and fellow refugees, their quest enabled by the notion that Mengele may be captured and brought to justice within the ruins of the Warsaw Zoo. As the young survivors discover what has become of the world, they must try to imagine a future within it.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

Children’s Summer Reading Program

Tuesday, June 27-Tuesday, August 15

This year’s theme is “Build a Better World”. We will have events, decorations, and activities that support the theme. This year we are collaborating with the Marblehead Animal Shelter to collect items needed for the animals as children read books over the summer. Several children’s events and crafts will have animal themes and highlight building a better world for animals in need.

The Children’s Summer Reading Program is open to all children, readers and pre-readers, ages 3-12.

Registration begins June 27th, and when they register, children receive their first reading log. On their reading logs, kids list on each line the name of the book they read or had read to them. Each log has room for 10 books, and there are 5 logs available for children for the summer. A donation of an item on the shelter wish list will also count as a book on their reading log. Collection bins for donated wish list items for the shelter will be in the Children’s Room.

When each log is completed, they get a sticker on the log and then receive a free gift certificate or event/institution voucher. We will have prize packages from the various organizations to give away for children reading or listening to at least 10 books and recording them on their reading logs. We keep the logs until the last day.

**The Marblehead Public Schools summer reading list books will be available in the Children’s Room throughout the summer. Get your assigned and recommended books here.**
