GLOUCESTER —  Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department quelled a one-alarm restaurant fire this morning.

At approximately 5:10 a.m., firefighters responded to The Rhumb Line Restaurant, 40 Railroad Ave., for reports of a possible structure fire.

Firefighters fought flames from the building’s interior and exterior. The fire began in the exterior rear stairwell, where they believe smoking materials were improperly disposed.

The building sustained electrical, structural, and water damage. Gloucester Fire estimates the damage to be at least $50,000.

No occupants were inside at the time of the fire, and no one was injured during the incident.
