GLOUCESTER — The Gloucester Fire Department and mutual aid partners battled a two-alarm fire overnight.

At about 12:39 a.m. on Monday, June 8, Gloucester Fire responded to report of a house fire in a single-family, single-story home at 10 Wolf St.

En route to the scene, the Gloucester Fire Engine 2 crew observed heavy fire coming from the home and declared a working fire.

When crews arrived, the fire was already heavily involved, appearing to have started in the home’s exterior before extending into its interior and attic space.

The two occupants of the home and their dog made it out safely prior to the arrival of fire crews on scene.

Crews began an aggressive attack on the flames showing in the exterior, while a second alarm was struck to bring additional support to the scene.

Once the exterior flames were knocked down, crews made entry to the home and were able to access the attic, where much of the fire had spread to, and were quickly able to bring the flames under control.

Gloucester Fire rescued two pet birds from the first floor, and returned the birds to the owners outside. Both birds are expected to be okay.

Once the fire was brought under control, crews remained on scene for several hours to conduct extensive overhaul operations.

A preliminary investigation determined the fire was likely caused by smoking materials outside the home.

Due to flame, smoke and water damage, the property suffered a major loss.

Gloucester’s building and electrical inspectors responded to the scene, as well as National Grid.

Mutual aid and standby support on scene was provided by Manchester, Rockport and Essex Fire, Beauport EMS and Rehab 5. Station coverage was provided by the Beverly, Hamilton and Ipswich fire departments.
