SALEM, MA— Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, IL) netted the game-winner with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in regulation as the Becker College Hawks strengthened their playoff hopes with a 4-2 win over the Vikings of Salem State Friday night at Rockett Arena. The Hawks move to 2-9 in the Colonial Hockey Conference and 8-13-2 overall while the Vikings fell to 1-8 and 3-17.

Salem State’s offense dominated the time on attack as they attempted 12 shots to just three for Becker in the first. The Vikings first chance came early as a Hawks’ minor penalty gave Salem State a man advantage. Jacqueline Sindoris (Charlestown, MA) converted the power play when she beat Madison Rigsby (O’Fallon, MO) short side for a 1-0 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the first period. However,  Becker knotted the game at 1-1 after Michaela Martin (Sheldon, VT) scored on a breakaway while her team was shorthanded.

Tied after the first, the two sides went into the second period evenly matched as they battled for puck control in the neutral zone virtually the entire period. Both goalies were kept busy as they each totaled over 10 saves in the period. Rigsby finished the night with 30 saves while Sarah Plourde (Hooksett, NH) made 23 saves.

In the third, Claudia Gee (Randolph, VT) enhanced the Hawks lead to 2-1 when she tipped in a Bailey Coons (Casper, WY) wrist shot from the point that snuck past Plourde’s glove side. However, the Vikings answered one minute later when Ally Webster (Hanson, MA) scored her first career goal when she defeated Rigsby with a strong slap shot on a power play after Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, ME) was called for tripping. Unfortunately for Salem State, Aiello retaliated for the Hawks moments later when she released a hard wrist shot from just outside the right circle that was too much for Plourde to handle as it would prove to be the game-winning  goal. The Hawks added one more score while Plourde was pulled for an extra skater as Becker went on to win 4-2.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Feb. 11 when the Hawks host the Vikings’ at 12:50 p.m.
