DANVERS – The Danvers Falcons played a solid, all-around game in their home opener, shutting out the Winthrop Vikings, 31-0. Falcons senior quarterback and captain Justin Mullaney opened the scoring with the longest gain from scrimmage of the night, a 42 yard touchdown scamper with 2:07 left in the first quarter to finish off a 6 play, 82 yard drive and give Danvers an 8-0 lead with Colby Holland adding the 2-pointer.
Danvers scored on its next two possessions, with Tahj Coakely scoring from 4 yards out to finish off a 3 play, 27 yard drive on the second play of the second quarter, and Holland also scoring on a 4 yard run to the right to complete an 8 play 76 yard scoring drive with 2:23 left in the first half.
Holland scored again on a 12 yard TD in the third quarter with 6:17 remaining to make it 28-0 before senior captain Zack Dillon connected on a 41 yard field goal.
The win gives rookie head coach Ryan Nolan his first varsity victory.
Danvers will play at Peabody next Friday night, while Winthrop travels to Medford
