Endicott Football Opens Season with 27-0 Win at St. Lawrence – Lynnfield’s QB Clayton Marengi Leads Offense

CANTON, N.Y.  The Endicott football team shut out St. Lawrence, 27-0, in the season opener for both programs on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.

Senior running back Anthony Caggianelli (Pelham, N.H.) guided the Gulls’ offense with a pair of rushing touchdowns, one coming in the second quarter (12-yards, 14:20, 10-0 lead) and the other in the third (5-yards, 1:29, 24-0).

Caggianelli finished the contest with career-highs in rushing touchdowns, points scored (12), rushing yards (80), and attempts (23).

The Gulls also saw starting quarterback Clayton Marengi (Lynnfield, Mass.) punch home a 12-yard rushing touchdown in the second (9:26, 17-0) and Ryan Smith (Glastonbury, Conn.) convert a pair of field goals (41/31) to bookend the scoring.

Defensively, Endicott stymied the Saints all game holding them to just five first downs and 148 yards of total offense.

The Gulls have not allowed St. Lawrence to score a single point over the last 96:22 of action dating back to last year’s week one matchup.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is 2-2 all-time against the Saints.
  • Marengi compiled 135 yards passing (16-for-21) and 47 yards rushing, including one score, in his second career start.
  • Caggianelli added 22 yards rushing to his stat line falling just shy of surpassing his career-high for all-purpose yards (107 vs. Norwich, 9/25/2021).
  • Matthew Licciardi (East Greenwich, R.I.) registered a career-high eight tackles (four solo) and one quarterback hurry.
  • Michael LeFebre (Methuen, Mass.) had two tackles and one interception, which he snagged via a jump ball scenario in the end zone on a fourth-and-goal desperation heave with 2:03 to play in the second.
  • Out 11 drives in the contest, St. Lawrence only entered the visiting half of the field three times and scoring position just once due to Endicott’s stifling defense.
