Endicott College Saturday Sports Wrap – Men’s Hockey Wins, Women Tie – Basketball: Men Lose, Women Win

BEVERLY –  The Endicott men’s ice hockey team claimed a 5-2 victory over Stonehill College on Saturday night in non-conference action at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

Less than seven minutes into the contest, Endicott produced a quick 2-0 advantage as freshmen Shamus Maloney (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Carter Horwitz (Tustin, Calif.) scored at 2:18 and 6:45, respectively, for the Gulls.

Horwitz highlighted the pair of goals as he one-timed home a feed from Alex Marcinek (Byron Center, Mich.) on a 2-on-1 shorthanded break for his second marker of the season.

Travis Army (Englewood, Colo.) responded for Stonehill 1:37 later off a crisp pass from Anthony D’Elia (Stamford, Conn.) to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

With less than three minutes remaining in the first, The Skyhawks nearly found the equalizer but Endicott effectively killed off a 5-on-3 situation – thanks in large part to freshman goaltender Kevin Aldridge (Beverly Hills, Mich.) who stopped five shots on net.

Marcinek went on to snipe home the game-winner at the 16:08 mark of the second period, before Endicott outscored Stonehill 2-1 in the third. Joseph Kaszupski (Henderson, Nev.) and Cam Bleck (Lake Forest, Ill.) both scored for the Gulls at 10:58 and 17:28, respectively, in the final 20 minutes of play in the matchup to round out the scoring for the hosts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Aldridge finished with 29 saves to move his record to 6-2-2 on the season.
  • Horwitz scored the first-ever shorthanded goal in program history in tonight’s win.
  • Bleck, Marcinek, Colin Powell (Easton, Conn.), and Ryan Dougherty (Sterling Heights, Mich.) all registered two points for the Gulls.
  • Endicott is 1-0-1 in the all-time series against Stonehill.

FOR THE FOES

  • D’Elia notched two assists to bump his team-leading total up to seven this season.
  • Freshman goaltender William Palmer (Cranston, R.I.) stopped 34 shots in the loss (3-3-2).
  • D’Elia also won a game-high 12 faceoffs in the loss

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Endicott women’s ice hockey team and Salve Regina University played to a 2-2 (OT) tie on Saturday night in non-conference action at the St. George’s School Ice Rink.

Endicott took an early 1-0 lead in the contest at the 8:56 mark of the first period as Dynnea Bezona (Fairbanks, Alaska) buried her third goal of the season on feeds from Rachel Lustenring (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Michelle Robichaud (Yarmouth, Maine).

Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) responded for Salve Regina later in the period when she potted her team-leading ninth tally of the 2015-16 campaign at 16:19.

In the second, Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) reclaimed the lead for the Gulls at the 5:26 mark on the power play via a slick pass by Maddy McNeally (Severna Park, Md.).

The Seahawks didn’t go away quietly; however, as junior defenseman Amanda Cronin (Medfield, Mass.) finally found the equalizer at the 5:40 mark of the third period on passes by Taylor Chisholm (Discovery Bay, Calif.) and Meredith Peppes (Lincoln, R.I.).

Both goaltenders went on to combine for 14 saves and thwarted one power play chance apiece down the stretch to secure the tie.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott freshman goaltender Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) stopped a career-high 32 shots.
  • Jonsson’s previous career-high was 20, which she recorded in back-to-back contests against Stevenson University on November 20 and 21.
  • Lustenring picked up her second assist of the year, while Robichaud and McNeally registered their first career assists in an Endicott uniform. 
  • Endicott is now 3-1-1 in road games this season.

Basketball.

BEVERLY – The Endicott men’s basketball team fell just short, 70-65, at the hands of visiting Eastern Nazarene College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at MacDonald Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Gulls fell to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in conference play, while Eastern Nazarene improved to (8-0, 2-0 CCC) on the season.

The Gulls took a narrow 39-37 lead into the break after rallying from being down 19-8 with 12:11 left in the first half.

The Lions turned it up in the second half, outshooting the Gulls, 36.4 percent (4-of-11) to 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from three point land in the half.

Endicott climbed to within three down 53-50 with 7:11 remaining, but the Lions held the Gulls without a basket for nearly the next three minutes as they slowly pulled away.

Junior guard Max Motroni (West Warwick, R.I.) tallied his six straight double-digit scoring attack of the season with 17 points and three rebounds to lead the Gulls’ offense.

  • Junior guard Kamahl Walker (Worcester, Mass extend his double-digit scoring streak to 18 consecutive games dating back to when it began on Jan. 31, 2015 with a 13-point effort on the day.
  • Junior forward Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.) recorded his three double-double (second consective) of the season as he tallied 12 points and a team-leading 14 rebounds.
  • Junior guard Drew Sawyer (Norwalk, Conn.) added 11 points as the Gulls placed four student-athletes in double figures.

  • Senior guard Justin Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) paced the Lions’ attack with 15 points, hitting 4-of-8 from long distance.
  • Senior guard Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) brought down 10 rebounds and led the team with three assists.
  • Senior guard Jaylen Owens (Johns Creek, Ga.) and senior guard Eric Lynch (Alpharetta, Ga.) chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively.

  • Endicott is 18-9 all-time and 12-5 at home vs. Easter Nazarene dating back prior to the 2002 season.

BEVERLY.- The Endicott women’s basketball team secured a 69-51 victory over Eastern Nazarene College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at MacDonald Gymnasium behind the effort of three double-digit scorers.

With the win, the Gulls improved to 3-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play, while Eastern Nazarene dropped to (4-4, 0-2 CCC) on the season.
Endicott led 20-10 after the first quarter and took a 37-25 advantage into the break and outscored the Lions in every quarter except for the third.
The Lions put together a 5-0 run spanning 2:16 in the third to pull to within five on a sophomore guard Jaysa Cooper (Frisco, Texas) layup to make it 39-34 with 04:55 remaining in the quarter.

The Gulls placed three student-athletes in double-figures tonight, as senior guard Kelsey Cuddy (Madison, Conn.) paced the squad with a game-high 21, while sophomore forward Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine) tallied a season-high 17 points and sophomore guard Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.) chipped in 10 points to go with a team-leading eight rebounds.

  • The Gulls’ largest lead of the game 69-48 (21 points) came with 1:41 remaining in the fourth quarter on a Shaw layup.
  • Cuddy has recorded double-digit points in every game this season.
  • Cuddy recorded five blocks in a single game for the second time in her career to rank tied for eighth all-time on most blocks shots in a single game.
  • Eastern Nazarene out-rebounded Endicott, 40-39.
  • Every student-athlete in the Gulls’ lineup today contributed points for just the second time this season.
