D1 – Boys Hockey State Final – St. John’s Prep Tops Winchester (3-2) – Postgame Interviews & Game Notes

BOSTON (Video – Photos) St. John’s Prep (22-3) scored the game winning goal with no time remaining in the third period to win the MIAA D1 state title with a 3-2 decision over Winchester. The Prep’s Johnny Tighe knocked it home from right out in front of the net with assists from Jake Vana and Brady Plaza. The #1 seeded Eagles were trailing (2-1) early in the third period but Tighe’s first of two goals tied the game at 5:34 of the third period. Game scoring is posted below. The game winning shot went in with no time showing on the TD Garden scoreboard. The referees conferred for over a minute as to whether to goal should count and the result of the deliberation ended with the game ending with a Prep win. There is not an option in the MIAA high school rules to look at a replay of a disputed goal. In the second period, the Prep had what appeared to be a goal called back when the referee lost sight of the puck. It appeared to MSO Sports and to the Prep players and coaches that the puck was in the net well before the referee blew the whistle to stop the play. The Sunday win by the Prep capped a perfect day at the Garden for north shore hockey teams with the Marblehead boys and St. Mary’s girls also winning state titles.
