City of Salem to Host First Annual Disability Pride Month Flag Raising Ceremony

Mayor Dominick Pangallo and the City of Salem invite community members, advocates, and partners to join the first annual Disability Pride Month Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 4:00 PM at Salem City Hall, 93 Washington Street (City Council Chambers, 2nd Floor), Salem, MA 01970.

This inaugural event marks Salem’s commitment to honoring disability identity, celebrating the contributions of people with disabilities, and advancing accessibility and inclusion throughout the community.

In Salem, nearly one in nine residents lives with a disability, representing more than 5,000 community members. Across Essex County, the number of residents with disabilities has grown in recent years, underscoring the need for accessible housing, transportation, and economic opportunities across our region.

Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to recognize disability as a natural and valuable part of our community and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a city where everyone belongs.

Disability Pride Month is observed each July to celebrate disability identity, culture, and leadership, and to mark the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed on July 26, 1990.

“Disability Pride Month is about honoring the struggle and resilience of people with disabilities, while celebrating identity, leadership, culture, and inclusion,” said Mayor Dominick Pangallo. “By raising the Disability Pride flag, Salem proudly affirms our commitment to accessibility, equity, and a community where everyone has the opportunity to fully participate.  I am grateful to City staff and community volunteers who have worked together to plan this year’s flag raising, and I invite all to join us in this important inaugural commemoration.”

The flag-raising ceremony will bring together residents, community organizations, and City leaders to celebrate the resilience, creativity, and leadership of people with disabilities.

The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend.
