Gloucester High School senior soccer captain and goalkeeper Abby Desmond joins host Dom Nicastro on the North Shore Sports Desk as the latest Cape Ann Savings Bank Student-Athlete of the Week!
A four-year varsity player who has played goalkeeper since age 5, Desmond has spent time at midfield and on defense for the Fishermen before returning to her natural position in net for her senior season. She’s also one of four team captains helping guide a Gloucester squad made up largely of underclassmen through a challenging fall campaign. In this episode, Abby discusses the importance of leadership, team chemistry and staying positive when the wins aren’t coming easily. She shares some entertaining stories about the captains’ nonstop group chat, the growth she’s witnessed among her younger teammates and her hopes for a strong finish to her final high school soccer season. Soccer doesn’t stop when the fall season ends. Abby plays competitive club soccer with Select, helped establish an indoor soccer team at Gloucester High and maintains a demanding year-round training schedule. She’s also a National Honor Society member who tutors fellow students, volunteers in her community and participates in the French and garden clubs. Looking ahead, Abby hopes to play soccer in college while studying physical therapy and athletic training. She’s already been in contact with several college coaches, including at Salem State University, as she considers the next chapter of her athletic and academic career. It’s a conversation about perseverance, leadership, friendships and making the most of the final weeks of high school soccer. The Cape Ann Savings Bank Student-Athlete of the Week series celebrates outstanding student-athletes from Gloucester, Rockport and Manchester Essex.
