City of Salem
“No amount of witchcraft can change the fact that #SalemMA has about 5,300 public parking spaces — which is not nearly enough for the 100,000 or so visitors that come on the busiest days of the Halloween season.”

Mayor’s Night Out – Fun For The Whole Family

Trick-or-treating, free museum admissions, garage parking, and merchant specials – Friday October 6, 3:00 p.m.
Mayor's Night Out

Mayor Dominick Pangallo, in partnership with Salem’s local attractions, museums, and Salem merchants, is pleased to announce that this Halloween’s “Mayors Night Out” will take place on Friday, October 6, 2023.

Beginning at 3:00 p.m. participating museums and attractions will open free of charge to Salem residents. Residents must provide a photo identification showing proof of Salem residency to gain free admission. Students may use a school identification card, bus pass, or a Salem Public Library card.

As part of Mayor’s Night Out the Museum Place Mall Garage and the South Harbor Garage will offer free parking to Salem residents after 2:00 p.m. (proof of residency will be required when you exit the garages).

“Mayor’s Night Out has become a great tradition for Salem residents,” said Mayor Pangallo. “October is a busy time for our businesses, and this is their way to say thank you to our citizens, offering a day that lets our locals enjoy Halloween.  Salem’s business community has really embraced this program and I am pleased to announce that we have more participants than we have ever had.  I am excited to greet all the trick-or-treaters for the first time as Mayor.”

There are over twenty businesses at Pickering Wharf participating this year.  Kathleen Spagnolo from Timeless Life Treasures has organized almost all of the businesses on the wharf to participate this year, so it’s definitely worth the walk, along with many other participating businesses elsewhere across the downtown.

The Salem law firm of Mazow | McCullough, PC will be distributing safety flasher lights to help keep our little trick or treaters safe and seen, Broad Smiles Pediatric Dentistry will be giving out toothbrushes to our youngsters, and the Creative Collective is returning to Mayor’s Night, bringing along their signature photo backdrops and candy, along with some costumed surprises as always. This year, they’re also inviting their friends from Lego to join the fun, offering extra treats and interactive Lego tables for everyone to enjoy!

New this year, as part of Disney+’s Hallowstream celebration for the 30th anniversary of Hocus Pocus, a free screening of the movie is scheduled at 7 PM (or at sunset) on the Salem Common. This screening is brought to you by Disney+ and the Creative Collective.  What a great way to end trick or treating than by watching this iconic film, where several scenes were filmed in Salem.  This screening is dependent on favorable weather.

The participants in Mayor’s Night Out are listed below.  Please continue to check www.salem.com as more participants are added daily.

Household Hazardous Waste Day

HHW Day Image

It happens once a year…Household Hazardous Waste Day! The Town of Danvers will conduct a collection on Saturday, October 7, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Danvers Transfer Station on East Coast Road off Route 1 South. Clean Harbors has been selected and will assist as the contractor. This event is NOT a curbside collection – you must bring your materials to the Transfer Station. It’s as simple as popping your trunk.
This collection is FREE for Danvers residents only, and identification is required. Non-residents can dispose of household hazardous waste with a charge and must contact ededonato@danversma.gov for fees and payment details prior to Thursday, October 5 2023. No commercial waste will be accepted. Commercial vehicles will be turned away.
We will accept fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, art supplies, photography chemicals, antifreeze, waste oil (up to 5 gallons), gasoline, household cleaners, drain cleaner, oil-based paints, and stains. For a complete list of household hazardous wastes accepted please review the Household Hazardous Waste Day Flyer (PDF).
We will NOT take propane tanks, NiCad or Lithium batteries, or fluorescent bulbs on this day since residents can bring them to the Transfer Station during regular business hours. Alkaline batteries A-D can be disposed of in your regular trash. We will NOT collect electronics because they are picked up curbside with bulk item stickers or collected during our Zero Waste Recycling Events.
REMEMBER: NO LATEX PAINT WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THIS EVENT. Latex paint can be dried out (add kitty litter or paint hardener) and placed with the lid off in an open bag with your curbside trash or discarded at the Transfer Station during regular business hours. We are asking residents to be particularly diligent when it comes to paint. Only oil-based paint will be collected on this day.
Please note that the Transfer Station will be CLOSED to normal business operations during this event.
Please be prepared to show your driver’s license (identification). Clean Harbors and DPW staff will direct residents during the event. Please place items in your car trunk, SUV or van hatch, or truck bed ONLY. No items will be taken from the passenger section. Residents must remain in their vehicles at all times.
If you have questions, please contact the DPW at 978-777-0001 x3011.
