SALEM (Video – Podcast – Photos) Ken Perrone took over the Brewer (Maine) Witches in 1967 and following several very successful seasons he began his 22-year career with the Salem Witches. Saturday afternoon both schools honored 88-year-old Ken Perrone. He is a Hall of Fame member at both schools and is the all-time winningest coach in Salem football history (157-64-7) In the video below, Perrone discusses his journey from Brewer to Salem. The two schools met on Saturday for what will be an annual scrimmage between the two schools. Salem Athletic Director Reilly Christie and Salem Head Football Coach Matt Bouchard were instrumental in putting the game together. The series is expected to continue in 2024 with a game in Brewer, Maine.
As a college baseball coach Perrone was the face of Salem State University’s baseball program. Under his leadership the Vikings amassed a record of 674-394-5, making him Salem State’s all-time leader in career wins. One of the top 30 coaches all-time in NCAA Division III history for victories, his Salem State baseball teams were selected for post-season tournament play twenty-four (24) times. Perrone also had be very successful coaching stint leading the Salem State University Baseball Program.
Ron Plante was on the Salem School Committee in the early 1970s when he came to call on Ken Perrone to consider the Salem coaching position. Plante shared the story with Bill Newell at Bertram Field prior to Saturday’s game.
