NAHANT — Town Administrator Antonio Barletta is pleased to announce that the Town of Nahant has
received a $96,900 state grant to develop a climate protection plan for Forty Steps Beach.
Nahant is one of 27 communities and organizational partners that received $12.6 million in funding through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ (EEA) Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM). The grants were announced at a ceremony in Plymouth on Monday, Sept. 19, kicking off the state’s recognition of Climate Week.
Grants assist awardees in preparing for severe coastal storms and the impacts of climate change.
The Town will provide an additional $32,600, bringing the total program to $129,500. The Town will use Federal Emergency Management Act funding received in 2018 for repairs to the coastal bank following storms.
The Town will use the grant funding to investigate ways to protect the shore and coastal bank at the beach. Funding also will be used to develop the preferred protection plan, and to begin working with state agencies that have permitting oversight.
“Forty Steps Beach is a true gem. We thank the Baker-Polito Administration and the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs for supporting our request, and for their foresight in protecting the state’s natural resources,” Town Administrator Barletta said.
“This grant will allow us to design a project that can be permitted and will provide future resiliency against rising sea levels,” Board of Selectmen Chairman Gene Canty
