National Grid is committed to delivering safe, reliable natural gas service to its customers. To make improvements to their gas distribution system, they will be replacing a section of the gas main that runs underneath the railroad crossing on Maplewood Avenue.
For their crews to work in this area safely, it will be necessary to close the railroad crossing to vehicular traffic. The roadway will be closed beginning on Friday, September 18th through the early morning hours on Monday, September 21st.
Although the roadway will be closed, care will be taken to provide access to the businesses and residences in this area. Detour signs will be placed in advance of the closure.

Brier Neck Water Main Replacement and Lining Project
Water main construction will soon resume in the neighborhood of Thatcher Road, Rockport Road, Witham Street, Salt Island Road, Barberry Way, Brier Neck Road, Cliff Road, Prospect Terrace, Arland Terrace, Warwick Road, and Palfrey Road, to improve the service and reliability of the municipal distribution system. The project will involve water pipe rehabilitation and installation of water mains, fire hydrants, and valves by the City’s Contractor N. Granese & Sons of Salem, MA.
The water work is scheduled to begin the week of September 14, 2020, and is anticipated to take 1 to 2 months to complete. The water work schedule must be coordinated with the gas work schedule so we anticipate a portion of the work will be suspended for a period of time until later in the Fall of 2020 or Spring of 2021. The work will require several short term water service interruptions to all buildings within the neighborhood, but long term water service interruptions will be avoided through the installation of temporary water bypass. In order to take the existing water distribution system out of service to allow new water pipe and valve installation, the contractor will install temporary water mains above the ground along the proposed route of contraction. The temporary water mains will be installed, disinfected, and tested: then connected to each building or side street pipe abutting the limits of water bypass. Following completion of the water main installation in the street, the buildings will be reconnected to the buried water main in the street and the temporary water mains will be removed.
For the duration of the project these areas will be active construction sites so please use caution when walking and drive at a reduced speed accordingly. Construction activities may require closing the street to through traffic. On the days when construction is ongoing, it is important not to have any cars parked in the roadway between the hours of 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM. “No Parking” signs will be posted in advance of construction and parking restrictions will remain in effect until construction is complete for that day. You will have access to your driveway and may park on the street after work hours; however, as the project progresses; certain activities may require limited access or parking.
