NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Matthew Simons reports that the Newburyport Police Department is actively investigating an apparent act of vandalism at Oak Hill Cemetery and is seeking the public’s assistance.
On Sunday, July 6, at approximately 12 p.m., Newburyport Police received reports of two gravestones that appeared to be damaged and vandalized.
The reporting party came to the police station and relayed that two gravestones dating from the late 1800s appeared to have had plaques and headstones forcibly removed.
One plaque commemorates English-born author James Parton, who wrote numerous biographies of prominent American political figures. The other gravesite is devoted to members of the Dodge family.
“The theft of bronze plaques from headstones at Oak Hill Cemetery is a deeply disturbing act that shows a complete disregard for the memory of those laid to rest and their families,” said Marshal Simons. “I am hopeful that someone may come forward with information that will lead to accountability for those responsible.”
Through a preliminary investigation, it is believed that the theft occurred sometime last week. There have been no other reports of vandalism or missing headstones at other cemeteries in Newburyport.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newburyport Police Department at (978) 462-4411.
