Sense of Wonder Children’s Nature Walk: Hot Chocolate Hike – Event Taking Place This Sunday in Topsfield (Radio Interview)

TOPSFIELD – The Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary will be hosting a wildlife walk this Sunday afternoon from 1:30-3:00 p.m. The walk will be led by Rita Gallant, Lead Field Teacher. (Registration information below)

Hot Chocolate Hike: February 21
Come explore the woodlands, wetlands, and fields along the sanctuary trails. Learn how to identify tracks in the snow and use your detective skills to observe nibbled twigs and nuts, and scat. On the walker’s return, they will warm up with a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

MAPLE SUGARING TOURS AT MASS AUDUBON’S IPSWICH RIVER WILDLIFE SANCTUARY IN TOPSFIELD

Celebrate the coming of spring as sugaring season gets underway at Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield. Sugaring tours will run on Saturdays and Sundays, February 27 & 28, at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and on March 5 & 6 and March 12 & 13 at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

On a one-hour naturalist-guided tour, learn how to identify a sugar maple tree, observe tapping and sap collection methods, discover how sap becomes syrup in the sugarhouse, and get a sweet taste of the final product. Rain or shine. Warm up after your tour by the woodstove in the barn, where homemade soup and baked goods, maple sugar candy, other maple products, and the sanctuary’s own maple syrup, are available for sale.

Tour fee: $10/adults, $8/children (Mass Audubon members: $9/adults, $7/children). Children under 3 are free and should be in a backpack.
