Winning Weekend For Endicott: Men’s and Women’s Basketball – Men’s and Womens Ice Hockey – Game Stories

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The No. 12/13 nationally ranked Endicott men’s ice hockey team routed Salve Regina University, 9-1, in conference action on Saturday night at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink.

Musil (Hull, England), Ross Olsson (Billerica, Mass.), Logan Day (Seminole, Fla.), Ryan Dougherty (Sterling Heights, Mich.), and Cam Bleck (Lake Forest, Ill.) all found the back of the net as well in the lopsided victory.

The nine-goal effort by the Gulls marks the second-most single-game goal total in program history. Endicott’s 11-goal triumph against Curry College on December 1, 2016 stands as the current single-game program record.

Endicott goaltender Kevin Aldridge (Birmingham, Mich.) compiled 25 saves in the win, while Salve Regina netminder Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.) had 27 saves.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Tommy Besinger (Milton, Mass.) dished out a single-game program record five assists. That total also counts as the single-game program record for points. 
  • Endicott is 4-1-0 in its last five games.

FOR THE FOES

  • Mason Brinich (Jupiter, Fla.) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard first with a tally at 16:10 of the first period, before Endicott responded with two goals before the end of the period including Olsson’s power play tally at 19:59.
  • The Seahawks won a game-high 43 faceoffs.

Women’s Hockey

BEVERLY– Endicott freshman forward Jillian Gibbs (Burlington, Vt.) scored her third career game-winning goal with 2:51 remaining in overtime to complete the Gulls’ comeback victory over SUNY Canton, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Raymond J. Bourque Arena. 

Gibbs rifled home a wide-open one-timer shot from the left post behind SUNY Canton goaltender Brooke Susac (Bowmanville, Ontario) after Michaela McNamara (Warwick, R.I.) gathered a feed behind the net from Ellen Carter (Roseville, Minn.) and slipped it into the slot from behind the right side of the net.

The OT GWG from Gibbs also extended Endicott’s winning streak to five-straight games, moved the Gulls’ overall record to 17-2-1 on the season, and kept them undefeated in league play at 8-0-0. SUNY Canton dropped to 7-10-1 overall, and 2-4-0 in conference play with today’s loss.

SUNY Canton led 2-0 through the first as Sydney Kinder (New York, N.Y.) and Tess Adams (Calgary, Alberta) potted goals at 10:21 and 16:57, respectively, in the period. Endicott responded in the second with tallies from Courtney Walpole (Allen, Texas) and Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) just one minute apart (5:05-6:05), before Gibbs’ GWG emptied Endicott’s bench onto to the ice to celebrate in the overtime period.

Gulls’ freshman netminder Alyssa Peterson (Cranberry Township, Pa.) stopped 18 shots in the win (4-1-0), while Susac had 40 saves in the loss (7-8-1).

  • Endicott is 5-0-0 in the all-time series versus SUNY Canton.
  • The Gulls have outscored the Kangaroos 19-4 in the all-time series.

  • Jessica Pele (Estevan SK) picked up her fifth assist of the year on Kinder’s tally at 10:21 of the first.

BOSTON— The Endicott men’s basketball team overcame a slow start to come away with 67-61 win at Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon inside Tansey Gymnasium in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Wentworth began the game with a 7-0 run—its largest lead of the game—with 17:40 on the clock and led the entire first stanza.

Just like that, the Gulls found themselves down, 25-24, at the halftime for their lowest output in any half this season in a conference matchup.

In a tale of two halves, Endicott was able to push aside its first half woes and responded with a strong effort, including a 15-0 run that proved to the the turning point in the game as the Gulls went from trailing 32-26 at 16:56 to leading 41-32 at the 13:42 mark and never looked back.

Senior forward Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.) and freshman guard Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) combined for over half of Endicott’s scoring with 17 points apiece in the contest.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Gulls are 24-10 against the Leopards in the all-time series, including a 10-6 ledger on the road.
  • Endicott swept the regular-season series, as the Gulls earned a 76-67 victory in the previous meeting on 01/03/17 earlier this year.
  • Endicott’s largest lead of the game was an 11-point margin with 50 seconds remaining in the game.
  • Sampson grabbed a team-high six rebounds as the Gulls pulled down a season-low 26 boards.

  • The Leopards had three student-athletes in double figures as senior guard Dan DeVaux (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored a game-high 21 points, followed by 16 points from junior forward Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) and 12 by junior guard Ben Kitzel (Short Hills, N.J.).
  • Freshman forward Matt Vartanian (Salem, N.H.), junior forward Michael Boaheng (Worcester, Mass.), freshman forward Stephen Azums (Hyde Park, Mass.), and junior guard Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) matched Endicott’s Sampson with a game-high six rebounds each.
  • Wentworth out-rebounded Endicott, 42-26, but turned the ball over more than twice as many times as the Gulls (24-10).

BOSTON— The Endicott women’s basketball team turned in a 65-42 effort for a commanding road win at Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon inside Tansey Gymnasium in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

The Leopards recorded the first bucket of the game before the Gulls held the opponent to a season-low point total in a single quarter (2) and went on a 19-0 run bleeding into the second quarter as Endicott led 19-2 with 8:55 remaining before the halftime break.

Endicott kept the pressure on as a 30-21 score at the break grew to 45-31 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

A strong fourth quarter effort secured the victory for the Gulls, as junior guard Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) scored a game-high 16 points with 12 of those points coming in the second half.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Gulls are 26-3 against the Leopards in the all-time series, including a 12-1 ledger on the road.
  • Endicott has won the past four straight meetings, including a regular-season series sweep  this season with a 78-57 win to ring in 2017 on 01/03/17.
  • Endicott limited Wentworth to 1-of-16 (0-for-5 from three-point range) in the first quarter.
  • The Gulls were able to score 23 points off 19 Wentworth turnovers throughout the contest and led by as much as 24 (61-37) with 3:32 left in them game.

  • Freshman guard Emily Pratt (Gardner, Mass.) tied her single-game career-high with four blocked shots alongside her eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • Endicott matched its season-low with 11 personal fouls committed.

  • The Leopards lost their 10th consecutive game.
  • Wentworth out-scored the Gulls 19-14 in the second quarter.
  • Sophomore guard Francesca Matira (Ledyard, Conn.) paced the squad with a team-high eight points, two rebounds, and two assists.
  • Freshman guard Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds to go with five points, two assists, and two steals.
