West Newbury: Bagnall Elementary School Participates in Similarity Awareness Program with Visit from Northeast Passage

WEST NEWBURY– Superintendent Justin Bartholomew and Principal James Day have announced that Bagnall Elementary School students recently participated in Northeast Passage’s Similarity Awareness program which teaches students about disabilities and helps foster a culture of inclusivity.

Bagnall students participated in activities and discussions led by representatives from Northeast Passage, a non-profit education and awareness group, during the week of Feb. 3. Students learned about and explored the similarities people share, regardless of ability.

Students participated in activities such as handball, ‘Taco Tag’, and ‘Banana Tag’ while in wheelchairs. They experienced what using a wheelchair was like, including the challenges, and learned that through practice activities can still be collaborative and fun.

Northeast Passage Therapeutic Recreation Specialists spoke to students about the comparisons between the Olympics and the Paralympics, and what the organization does for the athletes they work with. Students also discussed the similarities and differences between how they would normally perform activities versus with the wheelchair, as well as the importance of creating a welcoming space for everyone.

“This was a wonderful and engaging experience for students in all grade levels, as they were able to learn and collaborate with their peers through a unique exercise that fosters an inclusive and accepting environment for everyone,” said Principal Day. “I want to thank Northeast Passage for visiting the Bagnall and teaching our students important lessons while having fun.”

Physical Education Teacher Kristyn Zanardi helped bring the program to Bagnall Elementary with the support of the PTA. Zanardi states that the program is about more than just inclusion, it is a way for students to engage in important discussions about noticing similarities in adaptive sports.

“Throughout my career, I have been familiar with Northeast Passage and what they offer for competitive and recreational sports, however through collaboration with Page School Physical Education Teacher, Amy Wilson, I was able to learn more about the NEP school-based Similarity Awareness Program. With the support of our PTA, I was able to bring this amazing program to the Bagnall for all students to participate,” said Bagnall Physical Education Teacher Kristyn Zanardi. “No matter who you are, the outcome of any athlete is to compete for the same goal, learn more about how to be a part of a team, and have fun in the process.”
