Women’s Soccer

SALEM – Erica Farias (Tiverton, R.I.) scored two goals and goalie Madison Boucher (Southhampton, Mass.) pitched a shutout as the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs blanked the Salem State Vikings 3-0 at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs improve to 2-2 on the season while the Vikings remain winless at 0-4.

Farias’ first goal of the game came at the 6:18 mark of the first half off an assist from sophomore Courtney Hewitt (North Attleboro, MA). Amanda Backe (Danvers, Mass.) was able to corral the ball from above, but the ball spun free, rolling behind the goal line for a 1-0 UMD lead. Farias’ second goal was unassisted at the 60:02 mark when she broke free and squeezed the ball past Backe for a 2-0 advantage. Junior Abby Silva (Fall River, MA) would go on to score the third and final goal of the game unassisted at 67 minutes when she got the ball loose near the top left corner and rifled it past Backe. That shot was Silva’s only shot on goal of the game, making an excellent insurance goal.

Lucy Jensen (Boxborough, Mass.) nearly gave the Corsairs a 2-0 lead midway through the half, but this time Backe made the fingertip save, deflecting the ball off the crossbar. Both teams took six shots apiece in the half.

Boucher recorded seven saves in 84 and a half minutes of playing time. Backe who also recorded seven saves in a full 90 minute shift, allowed all three of the Corsairs goals.

Sophomore Korina Miguel (New Bedford, MA) was substituted in for Boucher for the final 5:26 of the game, facing only one shot and making no saves.
Salem State edged out UMass Dartmouth in the shot category 13-12, and were awarded one more corner kick opportunity than the Corsairs with the differential at 3-2.
