This is Mayor Mike Cahill with a Wednesday update on two topics:
First, all Salem and Beverly residents have received a letter from the Salem-Beverly Water Board notifying us all of an exceedance, averaged over the last four quarters’ tests, of allowable levels of Total Trihalomethanes, a water disinfectant byproduct in drinking water. These test results came from regular quarterly tests, and those that exceeded the allowed threshold were conducted at one of the Salem water pump stations. The Salem-Beverly Water Board describes this as of concern, but not an emergency.
We have posted the Water Board’s letter, as well as a helpful Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document, on the home page of our city website – beverlyma.gov – under News and Announcements. Please make the time to read both the Water Board’s letter and the DEP’s FAQs document.
Now to tonight’s trash and recycling update.
Today, Republic finished up most regular Friday routes but still has to pick up much of the neighborhood behind and next to Flair’s Cleaners and along Cabot St. in that vicinity, as well as Medford St. In addition, the regular Monday routes need pickup tomorrow. Therefore, no one should put any new trash and recycling out. This means that the regular Tuesday customers should not put your trash and recycling out at the curb for tomorrow. Hopefully, Republic will do better tomorrow and finish all regular Friday and Monday routes.
If you are a regular Friday or Monday customer, you can look at the city website – beverlyma.gov – and click on the Trash and Recycling button on the home page to see a map of what needs to be picked up tomorrow, since Republic was not able to complete the routes today. Please know that we are working closely to make sure Republic does not miss your streets. If the map shows your street as having been picked up and you know it has not, please e-mail me at mayorcahill@beverlyma.gov and we will make sure Republic knows to pick your street up tomorrow.
Republic will work through Saturday this week, and we continue to push them for more resources.
