Navigators Fall Wednesday Afternoon to Nashua

Two unearned runs halted the North Shore Navigators in a 2-0 loss to the Nashua Silver Knights on Wednesday afternoon. From start to finish, the close affair was quickly defined by the strong efforts from both pitching staffs.

Al Wallach (Framingham State) suffered the loss in his first appearance of the season even after throwing three strikeouts. Reliever Josh Partridge also pitched well, posting four strikeouts on the afternoon.

The first unearned run came in in the top of the fifth after a throwing error in the outfield allowed Nashua’s Cam Cruz into second base. Anthony Meduri’s double brought Cruz in for the first run. Two innings later, pitcher Josh Partridge (St. Joseph’s College) fell to another unearned run as Meduri again scored after advancing to second on an error by the pitcher and scoring on the first baseman’s error.

“I think unearned runs are just part of the game, you’ve got to move on when they happen, you can’t let them affect you,” Wallach said. “Just try to get the next guy out and make the next pitch.”

Nashua’s pitching stymied most of the North Shore offense, as Tom Githens (Northeastern) struck out seven Navigators on the day en route to the win. North Shore came close with multiple runners on base, but ended the day stranding nine. With only one home run and five RBIs through four games, Zizzo hopes the shift to small ball pushes hitters to break through.

“As far as hitting goes, it’s difficult. We’ve got a lot of good hitters; we have a lot of guys with good swings but we’re not getting base hits right now,” Zizzo said. “We’re not making good contact. So you just have to keep working and stay at it and keep grinding away and hope that it come around.”

While the hitting comes to form, the Navigators can still remain confident in the starting rotation, with a staff posting a 2.77 ERA in 26 innings. Wallach is confident that with a pitching staff full of returners to the Navigators serves as a confidence boost for the team.

“It’s nice to know everyone, you’ve seen everyone before so you know what you’re going to get,” Wallach said. “It’s a comfortable feeling knowing that it’s going to be a tough day for the other team’s hitters because our guys are good.”

The Navigators leave the friendly confines of Fraser Field, which held the second-most ever in team history with over 3200 attendees Wednesday. North Shore travels to Worcester and Brockton before playing Nashua again on Saturday night.
