City of Gloucester — The City of Gloucester and Cape Ann Communities, in collaboration with local fire response entities, relevant stakeholders, and SWCA Environmental Consultants,  has scheduled the commencement of the public review period for the 2024 Cape Ann Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). The review period is scheduled from April 30, 2024, through May 14, 2024.

The 2024 Cape Ann CWPP is a collaborative effort to enhance the safety and resilience of our community from hazardous wildfires. This plan aims to identify and address vulnerabilities while emphasizing the protection of lives, property, and critical resources.

As we enter this crucial public outreach phase, Cape Ann seeks the active participation and engagement of its community members. We invite all community members (full and part-time residents, property owners, individuals in the workforce) to review the draft CWPP and provide invaluable feedback to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with the unique needs of the region.

Public feedback is instrumental in shaping a comprehensive and responsive plan for wildfire mitigation.

The draft CWPP will be available for review and comment from April 30 to May 14. To access the draft CWPP and participate in the review process, interested parties can click here.

To submit comments on the draft, participants can visit the comment submission form by clicking here.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the community members, organizations, and agencies involved in this collaborative endeavor. Together, we will create a proactive path towards a more resilient, fire-adapted Cape Ann community.

For more information or to ask any questions, please contact Project Manager, Ari Porter, at Arianna.Porter@swca.com.

City of LynnAs Earth Month comes to an end, the City would like to share the photos and statements we received from community members! Thank you for joining us in celebrating our planet and working together to take action to protect our local environment.

Town of Newbury  – The Town of Newbury has once again this year partnered with specialists from Mass Audubon to monitor piping plovers on Plum Island and assist in efforts to protect these threatened species.

Piping plovers are considered a threatened species by both the state and federal government, as fewer than 10,000 remain. Piping plovers are seen on the beach from April into mid-July or August, then fly south.

Common beach activities, such as walking with or without dogs, can disturb mating and endanger camouflaged nesting sites.

The Town has shared delineations of public and private land with Mass Audubon staff, in an effort to ensure private property rights are protected. Mass Audubon may work on private property only with the permission of the landowner.

The Town shares the following tips for residents and visitors of Plum Island:

  • Follow signage and respect fenced-in areas around habitats
  • Please keep all dogs leashed on the beach at all times
  • Do not leave or bury trash on the beach, as this attracts predators

Residents and property owners with questions are asked to contact the Select Board’s Office at 978-465-0862, ext. 301.
