MANCHESTERBYTHESEA – After allowing the Old Colony Cougars (9-1) to score touchdowns on its first three possessions and amass 204 yards before halftime, the Manchester-Essex Green Hornets (6-4) held the Cougars to 50 total yards in the second half. But, the damage had been done.
The Hornets scored on their first two possessions and trailed 20-12 at the half. There was no more scoring until the Hornets put together a final 16 play 74 yard drive capped off by a 10 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Brennan Twombly (5/9 for 50 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT) to senior receiver Preston Potter (3 catches, 37 yards) with 1:33 left in the game. A two-point conversion by Potter brought the Hornets to within 2 for the final score of 22-20.
Old Colony barely recovered the ensuing kickoff to effectively end the game.
Jessie Oliver (5 carries, 62 yards) ripped off an electric 55 yard touchdown on M-E’s third play from scrimmage; and Henry Otterbein (8 carries, 68) scored on a 24 yard scamper early in the second quarter to round out the Hornets’ scoring.
Senior quarterback Matt McGuiggan scored 2 touchdowns on short runs for Old Colony after senior running back Matt Pitts had opened up the scoring for the Cougars.
Manchester-Essex outgained Old Colony 331 yards to 254.
