GLOUCESTER – Led by their Terrific Trio, the Gloucester Fishermen (14-3-2) won their opening round of the D3 MIAA Tournament game with Belchertown (11-6-1) by a 7-0 count. Gloucester attacked the visiting Orioles furiously in the first quarter after the visitors endured a three-hour school bus ride. Leading 2-0 after one, Gloucester picked up one more goal before the half, and then added one more in the third, followed by three additional goals in the 4th quarter.
Belchertown started gaining momentum in the third quarter with play mostly in the Gloucester end. But, they were unable to get through goalie Keagan Jewell. Gloucester coach Lauren Riley-Gove thought her team was letting up in the third and told them so…then Tri-captain Ari Scola scored three straight to ice the win.
Tri-captain Abby Lowthers also had a hat trick, and Tri-captain Ella Costa collected three assists with some beautiful stick work. Speedy Lilly Pregent tallied the first Gloucester goal, assisting on two others, and Anna Hafey assited Lilly’s goal.
Gloucester hosts number-10 seed Longmeadow (19-0-0) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
