SALEM, MA – The brushfire between Spring Pond and Highland Avenue in Salem is 95% contained and extinguished. There are still a few hotspots in areas that are smoldering, causing smoke on that side of Highland Avenue. To date, 172 acres have burned in this fire.
The Traders Way fire, on the other side of Highland Avenue in Salem Woods has burned approximately seven acres and has been contained to a perimeter surrounding the burned areas. Residual smoke from that fire is expected to continue through the night and longer, until the fire can be entirely extinguished.
With the dry conditions and warm weather forecast for tomorrow, October 30th, there is a possibility that the Salem Woods fire may flare up again. The area is being monitored through the night and into tomorrow by the Salem Fire Department.
Residents in the immediate vicinity are encouraged to remain vigilant and call 911 if they see flames.
Currently there is no plan to cancel or delay school at Salem High School and the Horace Mann Laboratory School for tomorrow; however, that may change based on wind direction and conditions of the fire. Should any cancellation or delay be necessary, Salem Public Schools will notify school families via Parent Square.
During the current brush fires, people who are sensitive to poor air quality should consider wearing a mask when outdoors in Salem. If possible, remain indoors with your windows closed.
Do not go into the woods or into any areas where the fire is burning. Doing so places yourself and first responders in danger. Stay clear of these areas and allow first responders to work.
As a reminder open burning is always prohibited in Salem and with the current dry conditions, it’s especially important NOT to do so. When grilling, ensure the area is clear of dry brush or any combustibles materials. Smoke material should be discarded thoroughly in a secure container or doused with water. Discarded smoking material should never be tossed on the ground or into a wooded or brush area, even if you think it’s extinguished.
