Marblehead 5 Gloucester 0 – Comments and results from Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal

1.       Senior quad-captain Justin Faia beat Roger Tanaka 6-3, 6-4 in a tough match in which Justin was the better player in the key points.

2.       Sophomore Billy Ackerman stepped up to 2nd singles to beat Chris Noyes 6-1, 6-1 with quality forehands and solid serving.

3.       Senior Mike Conlin in his singles debut beat Derek Hopkins 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Mike played a solid match winning the big points when it mattered.

1st doubles Senior quad captains Sam Orenstein and Garett Tully played quality doubles and pulled out the win in the third set super-tiebreaker. They beat Ty Parisi and Dan MacDowell 3-6, 6-4, 10-4. The super tie-breakers was played very well by MHS. With the second set win giving them momentum, they won the first 2 points of the tie-break and maintained the lead till the end.

2nd doubles: Sophomores Dan Litvak and Jack Quigley beat Joe Kibango and Anthony Parco 6-0, 6-0 with excellent serving and net play. Dan and Jack also used some new formations that we’ve been practicing to their advantage.

In first sub-varsity play, Adam Sherf and Tony Gluskin won 6-2; then Adam teamed up with Harry Dolin and won 5-0.

Excellent sportsmanship ruled the day and I think Gloucester will be the team to beat next year in the NEC.

Ipswich coach Kerri O’Connor:  “We started off slow today offensively as we adjusted to Lynnfields strong pressure on ball but turned it on second half playing a much cleaner game.  Meghan O’Connor, Delaney Whooley and Julia Glavin controlled all but a handful of draws.  Caitlyn Stevens led in goals today with controlled shots, Annie Gillis had strong fast breaks and numerous ground balls.  Emily Martineau had critical saves and smart clears to Chloe Rogers who protected the ball and transitioned well upfield.  Deidre O’Flynn did well to get open and move the ball quickly upfield and Haley O’Connor served as a spark plug to help ignite our team both offensively and defensively when we needed it.  Overall, I am proud of how we continue to play for one another and show great teamwork with a majority of assists on all of our shots to goal.”
