Danvers Police Department Respond to Swatting Call at St. Johns Prep
Danvers, MA – At approximately 2:00pm Monday, a swatting* call came into Danvers Dispatch regarding a possible active shooter situation at St John’s Prep in Danvers. While responding to the call and sweeping the campus, there were reports of a firearm discharge by one of the responding law enforcement officers – a report which has not yet been confirmed. This secondary report elevated the situation from a normal swatting response to an actual active shooter situation.
At the conclusion of the campus sweep, there were no identified threats and no injuries reported. Evacuated students are being released to their families. The swift and professional response from the Danvers Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, and our regional public safety partners to this potentially tragic situation made it possible clear the large campus in less than one hour. Our deepest gratitude to area agencies for their response. We also commend the St. John’s Prep administration for their composure and cooperation as the situation unfolded. Their leadership in the face of chaos made a difference.
At this point, while there is no active threat, this remains an ongoing investigation. We appreciate everyone’s support and patience.
* Swatting is a criminal harassment tactic of deceiving an emergency service (via such means as hoaxing an emergency services dispatcher) into sending a police or emergency service response team to another person’s address.

The 27th Annual Newburyport Human Rights Commission Peace Prize Awards Ceremony will be held Thursday, May 25th at 6pm at City Hall. We will celebrate students from Newburyport schools who have been chosen by their respective schools to receive a Peace Prize. These students are being honored because of their willingness to speak up, to be inclusive, to value differences, and to welcome someone new. Whether leading quietly or by example, by using their voices or through their actions, each of these students models respect of others and helps to create a peaceful atmosphere in his/her/their respective schools.
We will also celebrate one of our fellow adult community members and also one of our local community groups. These award winners teach, write grants, write plays, write sermons, organize groups, establish programs, support the underserved, mentor, speak up, stand up, donate time, and engage the community in their peaceable activities.
Each award winner, students and adults, and groups alike, embodies the mission of the Human Rights Commission to uphold the human rights of all persons in Newburyport by promoting and supporting a sense of welcome and inclusion, and working to eliminate prejudice, intolerance, discrimination, and acts of hate in our community.
Come join us for this wonderful and uplifting event which is open to all. Families are welcome and youth are encouraged to attend and support their peers.
The MERSD School Committee will hold a public hearing tonight (5/23) to discuss the proposed amended school budget. All residents are welcome to join the conversation in person at the high school or virtually.
