Afternoon Coast Guard Update –

BOSTON –  The Coast Guard and local agencies found and rescued the missing boater from Essex Thursday morning.

At about 6 a.m., 61-year-old Ted Gulvemond set off three flares alerting Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod’s HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew to his location.

Coast Guard Station Gloucester’s 29-foot boat crew along with the Ipswich Harbormaster found Gulvemond aground in the marsh on the Ipswich side of the Essex River. Station Gloucester’s boat was unable to reach Gulvemond due to the shallow area, so two crew members from Gloucester drove to Argilla road where they were able to walk the marsh and reach Gulvemond.

The crew members from Gloucester met up with the Ipswich Harbormaster, who brought him to awaiting Emergency Medical Services.

“We are happy that Gulvemond was found safe and sound,” said Petty Officer Joseph Page, a search and rescue planner at Coast Guard Sector Boston. “We’d also like to remind mariners of the importance of wearing life jackets, leaving a float plan with loved ones so they know where you were going, and making sure you have working communication devices before heading out on the water.”
