TEWKSBURY – Chief Ryan Columbus reports that the Tewksbury Police Department arrested and charged a Lynn man with breaking and entering and several other charges as a result of a report received from an alert community member.
ROBERT CHERRY, AGE 62, OF LYNN, was arrested and charged with:
Breaking and Entering in the Daytime
Carrying a Dangerous Weapon (Brass Knuckles)
Possession of Burglary Tools
Possession of a Class E Substance
Common and Notorious Thief
On Wednesday, July 6, at approximately 12:40 p.m., Tewksbury Police responded to a report of a suspicious male who was seen entering a home on Kennedy Road where residents were known to not be at home.
Multiple Tewksbury Police Officers arrived at the scene within three minutes, and were informed that the suspicious male was believed to still be inside the home. Officers set up a perimeter around the home, and a short time later an individual later identified as CHERRY walked out of the residence.
Officers detained CHERRY and contacted the homeowner, who reported he did not know CHERRY and was not expecting visitors. Officers searched the home and found parts of it had been ransacked, though the homeowner did not report any items of value missing.
A subsequent search of CHERRY and his vehicle, which was parked nearby in the driveway of another home, led to the discovery of clear plastic gloves, work gloves, brass knuckles, a crowbar, and a bottle containing 20 tablets of Gabapentin, among other items.
CHERRY was arrested at the scene. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Lowell District Court.
“This is a great example of how residents can make Tewksbury a safer community for all. Our officers were able to respond while the suspect was still on scene, instead of hours later when the homeowner would have returned from work,” said Chief Columbus. “We are extremely grateful for the neighbor who called us. We encourage our residents to call us when they believe something might be out of the ordinary. Thanks to this neighbor we were able to quickly apprehend this suspect.”
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
