Strong Defense Leads Endicott College Football Over MIT 21-9 / Endicott Field Hockey Wins

CAMBRIDGE – Endicott’s defense held MIT to a season-low 165 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium to remain undefeated in New England Football Conference (NEFC) play with a 21-9 victory.

The Gulls (2-3, 2-0 NEFC) managed the clock to near perfection averaging 2:20 per drive (15 total), while totaling 7:30 of possession or more in each quarter to aid their defense in limiting MIT to 28 yards rushing and 137 yards passing. Endicott also notched two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the win.

Joe Kalosky (Plymouth, Conn.), Michael Scherer (Middlefield, Conn.), and Lavante Wiggins (Pittsfield, Mass.) accounted for the scoring as all three student-athletes punched in rushing touchdowns inside MIT’s 10-yard line, respectively.

ENDICOTT OFFENSE/DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

  • Kalosky’s nine-yard run with 1:14 left to play in the first quarter opened up the scoring in the contest.endicott-fb-10-1-16
  • Scherer added a six-yard TD dash with 2:16 remaining in the second quarter to break up a 7-7 tie before Wiggins made it 21-7 with his team-leading fourth rushing TD of the season at 7:57 of the third.
  • Wiggins finished the contest with 59 yards rushing on 18 attempts.
  • Kalosky manufactured 22 yards on the ground and 145 yards through the air (32 attempts, 19 completions, one interception).
  • Chris Lipscomb (West Springfield, Mass.) hauled in 43 yards on four receptions, and netted 182 yards punting on five attempts (36.4 average, 53 long, 2 inside-20).
  • William Rivera (Orangeburg, N.Y.) paced the Gulls in tackles with nine (1 solo, 8 assisted, 2.0 for a loss, one pass breakup).
  • James Lewis (New Fairfield, Conn.) had four tackles and intercepted one pass, while Christian Martinez (Tariffville, Conn.) collected two tackles (one for a loss), an interception and one pass breakup.
  • Zachary Poirier (Pawcatuck, Conn.) also shined defensively with seven tackles (five solo, one for a loss) and one pass breakup.
  • Grayson Maddux (Park City, Utah) rounded out the list of highlights for the Gulls with four tackles (one solo) and a fumble recovery.
  • The Gulls’ defensive unit broke up a season-high eight passes.
  • Christian Cole (Goshen, N.Y.) led the defensive unit with a career-high three pass breakups.

MIT OFFENSE/DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

  • Jack Bernatchez (Belgrade, Maine) punched home MIT’s only offensive score with a one-yard TD run at the 11:42 mark of the second quarter.
  • The Engineers are also recorded a safety at 5:52 of the fourth on a fumble that went out of bounds in Endicott’s end zone.
  • Eddy Garcia-Montes (Miami, Fla.) guided MIT’s offense with six catches for 84 yards.
  • Udgam Goyal (Frisco, Texas) went 12-for-32 passing for 137 yards and two interceptions.
  • Kodiak Brush (Yorba Linda, Calif.) registered a game-high 13 tackles (11 assisted, 0.5 sacks, 0.5 tackles for a loss), and one interception.
  • Matt Iovino (Sayville, N.Y.) finished second on the team in tackles with eight total (all assisted).
  • Zach Duguid (Beverly, Mass.) had one tackle and recovered a fumble on a muffed punt return.

NOTES

  • The Gulls are 13-1 in the all-time series against MIT, which dates back to 2003.
  • Endicott won the possession matchup by nearly 11 minutes (35:07-24:53).
  • The Gulls compiled 100 or more rushing yards for the fourth time this season.
  • Endicott went 3-for-4 in the red zone.
  • MIT checked into today’s game ranked No. 9 in the country in passes intercepted, and No. 17 in third down conversion percentage defense.

BEVERLY —  Six different Gulls scored as the Endicott field hockey team erased an early deficit to down the visiting Salve Regina Seahawks, 6-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at North Field in a rain-soaked victory.

Endicott struck first as junior midfielder Emily Hirtle (Rowley, Mass.) sent one in from the top of the circle on a feed from sophomore forward Sophia Cogliano (Saugus, Mass.) as just 1:18 had elapsed in play.

Then later, trailing 2-1, the Gulls knotted the score at two-all heading into halftime as sophomore midfielder Meghan Stanton (Newburyport, Mass.)took a pass from freshman defender Emily Graham (Westford, Mass.) and chipped it up and over Seahawks’ junior goalie Jessie Severino (Bradford, Conn.) for her first goal of the season with just seconds remaining before the break.

Endicott outscored Salve Regina, 4-1, in the second half as the Gulls received goals from sophomore defender Maggie O’Reilly (Cheshire, Conn.), junior defender Emylee Wood (Kensington, N.H.), junior forward Brittany Bushey (Pittsford, Vt.), and freshman forward Megan Guiry (Delmar, N.Y.).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott leads the all-time series, 20-3, dating back to the 2003 season.
  • Senior goalkeeper Cheka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.) made eight saves as she improved to 6-4 overall and 5-1 CCC on the year.
  • The Gulls recorded a season-high two defensive saves as senior defender Emily Paladino (North Reading, Mass.) registered her team-leading third defensive save of the season, while junior midfielder Samantha Crowley (Leicester, Mass.) earned her first career defensive save.
  • Guiry scored her first career goal for the Gulls in the 64th minute and Graham picked up her first career assist with 34:28 on the clock right before the half.
  • Hirtle and Stanton each tallied one goal and one assist in the effort for the Gulls.
  • Hirtle and E. Wood currently lead the team with 13 points apiece on the year.

FOR THE FOES

  • The Seahawks earned 16 penalty corners to Endicott’s nine.
  • Severino made seven saves as she fell to 6-4 on the season.
  • Freshman defender Hannah Filiault (Keene, N.H.), sophomore midfielder Jillian Mosca (Whitesboro, N.Y.), and junior midfielder Amber Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) scored for the Seahawks in the fifth, 16th, and 51st minutes, respectively.
  • Amber Cody  leads the CCC with 11 goals and 27 points on the season.
  • Senior midfielder Erin Gendreau (Sandwich, Mass.) tallied two assists as she is now tied for fourth in the conference with five assists on the season.

NOTES

  • The Gulls defeated the Seahawks, 4-1, on 11/4/15 in the most recent meeting before today in the CCC Semifinals.
