The North Shore Navigators and the Seacoast Mavericks played for the second time in as many days on Sunday in what was an exciting offensive battle. Both teams were able to produce a lot of offense, and the Navigators fell just short of defeating the Mavericks, who ended up winning by a final score of 10-8.

The biggest inning of the day for the Navigators was the fifth inning, when the team scored five runs. Trailing 8-2 heading into the inning, but thanks to a huge rally they cut the lead to one run. The most notable play of the inning was a two out, bases loaded double by Riley Herold (Nebraska-Omaha). The hit drove in two runs and was absolutely crucial to the Navigators being able to cut the lead to just one.

In the sixth inning, the Navs actually managed to tie the game up at 8. They had the bases loaded to start out the inning, and Colby Maiola (UMass Lowell) cracked a single to right field that plated the game tying run. The Navigators were unable to do any more damage though, as the Mavericks were able to get out of the jam.

Elsewhere on offense, the top of the order did a really good job for the Navigators. Joey Pena (St. Thomas Aquinas), MacDaniel Singleton (Salem State), and Nick DiBenedetto (Trinity College) combined to go 4-9 on the day and scored six of the team’s eight runs. They also combined to walk five times, and Singleton and DiBenedetto each were able to record an RBI.

In terms of the team’s pitching, Sean O’Neill (Brandeis University) had the best performance of any Navigator on the day. The Reading native pitched three innings during the game and only had to face 10 batters. He totaled two strikeouts over the course of the night and his lone blemish was allowing a home run to Alvin Swoope. It was the only hit O’Neill would allow.

The Navigators will return to action on Tuesday, June 28 when they host the Torrington Titans at Fraser Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
