LYNN (Video – Photos) The three-time consecutive defending state champion St. Mary’s Spartans girls basketball team played their most complete game of this season Monday night at home against Apponequet. #5 seeded St. Mary’s (19-6) sputtered early in the first quarter but then turned it on to topple #12 Appponequet (20-4) 68-40. The Spartans led by just 2-points at the end of the first quarter (9-7). By the time halftime arrived, St. Mary’s led 29-17 and from there the lead got larger. The 28-point margin of victory was St. Mary’s largest lead, first at 66-38 late in the fourth quarter. The keys to the win was the St. Mary’s trapping defense, converting on inside the paint scoring, and draining nine 3-point shots. Jillian Roberts led St. Mary’s with 14-points / 4 three-point shots, followed by Bella Owumi (13-points), Reese Matela (12-points), and Lily Norton (10-points).
